Presley Heights is a Tupelo neighborhood with music ties near downtown

In 1935, music royalty was born in Presley Heights — the King of Rock and Roll, to be specific. Elvis Presley and his family lived in the eastern Tupelo neighborhood before moving to Memphis when Presley was 13. Though he would largely hone his craft elsewhere, it was in his neighborhood — the one that now bears his name — where he was first introduced to music. Presley’s birthplace has been transformed into a museum celebrating his life and legacy, and tourists come from across the region to pay respects. The neighborhood has more to offer than nostalgia. The area’s hills give it a distinct feeling within Tupelo, and restaurants and bars line East Main Street. “I lived there for many years, and it is the most beautiful landscape and terrain that we have in Tupelo,” says Keith Henley, an owner and broker at Elite Realty. “It’s also conveniently located to downtown.”

Ranch-style and New Traditional homes with lower property taxes

Presley Heights is primarily residential and has a mix of older ranch-style homes and New Traditional houses built in recent years. Ranch-style homes can range from $260,000 to $380,000, while New Traditional houses often go from $300,000 to $330,000. Properties commonly sit near Briar Ridge Road and Elvis Presley Drive. Henley says the area historically has lower property tax rates than the western half of the city. While most of the neighborhood’s oak tree-lined streets do not have sidewalks, Henley says the city is adding more of them in the western half of the area to help residents and visitors walk to places of interest, both in the community and in downtown Tupelo.

Most restaurants line East Main Street. Johnnie’s Drive In, the city’s oldest eatery, opened in 1945. It is a cash-only barbecue joint filled with Elvis memorabilia, including the booth where Presley used to sit. Dairy Kream, opened in 1955, is a local institution with sandwiches, hot dogs and ice cream. Near Interstate 22, Los Toros serves authentic Mexican cuisine.

The Presley Heights Antique Mall sells older household items. Just west of U.S. Route 45, Reed’s department store sits among boutiques like L.A. Green Tupelo. The neighborhood has a Dollar General, and a Kroger is around 3 miles away. The Mall at Barnes Crossing, which has about 12 million annual shoppers, is about 6 miles north.

Sports at Cadence Bank Arena and music at the Tupelo Elvis Festival

There is often something happening in the heart of the city, and residents are close to the action. “Downtown has undergone a revitalization in the last couple decades,” Henley says. “It’s becoming a destination point.” Cadence Bank Arena hosts events like Harlem Globetrotters basketball games and public ice-skating nights. Each summer, downtown Tupelo holds the Tupelo Elvis Festival, a multi-day celebration of the King with live music, a 5K run and other activities. The Farmers’ Depot is held downtown on Saturdays each summer and fall.
