Presley Heights
Ranch-style and New Traditional homes with lower property taxes
Presley Heights is primarily residential and has a mix of older ranch-style homes and New Traditional houses built in recent years. Ranch-style homes can range from $260,000 to $380,000, while New Traditional houses often go from $300,000 to $330,000. Properties commonly sit near Briar Ridge Road and Elvis Presley Drive. Henley says the area historically has lower property tax rates than the western half of the city. While most of the neighborhood’s oak tree-lined streets do not have sidewalks, Henley says the city is adding more of them in the western half of the area to help residents and visitors walk to places of interest, both in the community and in downtown Tupelo.Historic eateries along East Main Street, while shopping is spread out
Most restaurants line East Main Street. Johnnie’s Drive In, the city’s oldest eatery, opened in 1945. It is a cash-only barbecue joint filled with Elvis memorabilia, including the booth where Presley used to sit. Dairy Kream, opened in 1955, is a local institution with sandwiches, hot dogs and ice cream. Near Interstate 22, Los Toros serves authentic Mexican cuisine. The Presley Heights Antique Mall sells older household items. Just west of U.S. Route 45, Reed’s department store sits among boutiques like L.A. Green Tupelo. The neighborhood has a Dollar General, and a Kroger is around 3 miles away. The Mall at Barnes Crossing, which has about 12 million annual shoppers, is about 6 miles north.
Sports at Cadence Bank Arena and music at the Tupelo Elvis Festival
There is often something happening in the heart of the city, and residents are close to the action. “Downtown has undergone a revitalization in the last couple decades,” Henley says. “It’s becoming a destination point.” Cadence Bank Arena hosts events like Harlem Globetrotters basketball games and public ice-skating nights. Each summer, downtown Tupelo holds the Tupelo Elvis Festival, a multi-day celebration of the King with live music, a 5K run and other activities. The Farmers’ Depot is held downtown on Saturdays each summer and fall. The Elvis Presley Birthplace, lakes and parks with athletic facilities
The Elvis Presley Birthplace has Presley’s childhood home on its property, as well as the chapel his family attended and the walking trails he traversed. The center is open seven days per week, with reduced hours on Sundays. Ticket prices vary and are sold at the welcome center. The lakefront Veterans Park is the neighborhood’s recreation hub. The park is home to the Tupelo Aquatic Center, plus softball fields, disc golf courses and a Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Chandler Park has a playground, and Longs Lake is a fishing spot where largemouth bass can be caught. Gumtree Park, about 3 miles west, has two basketball courts. Tombigbee Lake State Park, with camping and boating opportunities, is about 5 miles east.Highly rated schools that let older students take dual-credit college classes
Students are served by the Tupelo Public School District. They can attend Carver Elementary School, which serves students in kindergarten through first grade and has an A rating on Niche. Lawhon Elementary School, for grades two through five, earns an A-minus. Those in grade six can attend Milam Elementary School, which holds an A score. It is the school Elvis Presley attended when he was young, although it was referred to as a junior high school back then. Tupelo Middle School has an A rating, as does Tupelo High School, where students can take dual-credit college classes through Delta State University and Itawamba Community College.Convenient access to downtown, a hospital and an airport
The neighborhood has Interstate 22 to its north and U.S. Route 45 to its west. East Main Street runs through its center, taking drivers less than 3 miles to downtown Tupelo. North Mississippi Medical Center-Tupelo is about a 5-mile drive, and Tupelo Regional Airport is less than 10 miles away. Parts of the neighborhood near North Veterans Memorial Boulevard and North Feemster Lake Road can flood. Railroad tracks are found along the community’s southwest edge.
