Tyaskin borders two rivers on the Eastern Shore
Boats belonging to the Eastern Shore Sailing Association can often be seen gliding across the Chesapeake Bay, the nation’s largest estuary, but they spend much of their time moored in the tiny community of Tyaskin. This region of Maryland’s Eastern Shore borders the Nanticoke River on one side and the Wicomico River to the south, with both flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. Marinas, parks and kayaking trails dot Tyaskin’s shoreline, while homes and farms fill the rural expanse in the middle. Most of the nearest shops, restaurants and schools are to the east in Salisbury, making Tyaskin a landing spot for those who want to be near the waterfront and not much else.
Spacious properties and waterfront homes
Homes are concentrated in the northwest corner, where Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals line Tyaskin Road and private docks extend out from houses along the Nanticoke River. Farther inland, ranch homes sit on acre-plus lots off highways and county roads. Houses usually cost between $185,000 and $285,000, though riverfront homes have sold for $520,000 to $2.25 million. The community’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.
Getting out on the water in the Nanticoke and Wicomico rivers
Swimmers can enter the Nanticoke River from the sandy beachfront in Tyaskin Park, also home to a pier for fishing and crabbing. Kayakers and canoers take off from the launch at Wetipquin Park to the east. On the south end of Tyaskin, boaters and paddlers reach the Wicomico River by navigating through the Ellis Bay Wildlife Management Area. A boat ramp off Muddy Hole Road allows access to this 3,200-acre wetland preserve. Creeks and streams form marshy trails that small boats and kayaks can follow through the preserve. Some members of the Eastern Shore Sailing Association keep their vessels in Tyaskin when they’re not racing or day cruising.
Children can go to Wicomico County Public Schools
Kids in Tyaskin can go to Westside Primary for kindergarten and first grade, followed by Westside Intermediate for second through fifth grade. Niche gives both schools a B grade. Salisbury Middle scores a B-minus, while James M. Bennett High receives a B. The high school’s 20 team sports include bocce, field hockey and lacrosse.
All-you-can-eat crab in Tyaskin and shopping in Salisbury
An old chicken house near the Wicomico River was transformed into The Red Roost crab house in the 1970s, and the eatery continues to serve all-you-can-eat crab in the dollar bill-covered shack. People can pick up sandwiches, snacks and drinks 2 miles south of Tyaskin at Cedar Hill General Store. For a full grocery run, there are stores, including Food Lion, in Salisbury. The city is Wicomico County’s shopping hub, home to Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club.
Highway connects to Salisbury
Residents can drive Maryland Route 349 down the shore or east to Salisbury. Planes take off from Salisbury Regional Airport for nonstop flights to Charlotte and Philadelphia.
