Construction camp for the McNary Dam turned contemporary community

McNary, a small community on the Columbia River, was originally established between 1947 and 1948 as a camp for workers building the McNary Dam. Since the dam was completed in 1954 and the community was annexed by the city of Umatilla, a contemporary golf course community has replaced government housing, and the high-tech industry has overtaken construction jobs. “The area has been growing and booming for the last 15-20 years,” says Mike Boylan, the owner and principal broker of Boylan Realty LLC. Boylan was born and raised in the area, and he attributes its rapid growth to the data centers Amazon has been developing in nearby Boardman and Umatilla for more than a decade. “They provide good, high-end jobs. And they bring in security personnel and contractors, too. You typically can’t find an RV spot in town when it’s filled with contractors.”

A nature preserve and a sandy beach surround McNary Lock and Dam

The calm of the McNary Wildlife Nature Area muffles the rushing waters of the nearby dam. Parkgoers can watch fish struggle against the current near the dam’s fish ladder in the underground Oregon Fish View Room, while several nearby ponds are stocked with trout during the spring. About 3 miles of walking trails weave through more than 300 acres of the marshy preserve, a popular destination among birdwatchers. Picnic benches scattered on a hill peer down on the sandy bank of the McNary Beach Park, which has a boat launch, a swimming area and a hot pink plastic dragon for children to scale. A couple of miles inland, the Big River Golf Course offers 18 holes and views of the Columbia River. Originally established in the 1940s with nine holes, the course stretches across 100 acres today.

Rock the Locks Music Festival goes on its third year in 2025

For two summers in a row—going on three in 2025—the Big River Golf Course has transformed into the outdoor venue for the Rock the Locks Music Festival. Bands like ZZ Top, Barenaked Ladies and Halestorm have headlined the rock music festival’s three-day schedule, while the 2025 lineup includes Black Veil Brides.

Seventies split-levels and ranchers, and a new golf course community

Split-level and ranch-style homes—mostly built in the 1970s and 1980s—face the quiet residential streets of McNary, ranging in price from $225,000 to $400,000. These homes come with driveways and additional gravel parking spaces, making room for boats or recreational vehicles. New traditional bungalows built after 2020 back up to the Big River Golf Course, with small patios that feature views of the putting greens.

Robotics courses and a regionally competitive team at Umatilla High

Local children may begin their K-12 journeys at McNary Heights Elementary School and Clara Brownell Middle School, both of which earn C-minus grades from Niche. Afterward, they may enroll at Umatilla High School, which scores a C-plus. The high school’s graduating class of 2024 had a 90.5% graduation rate, which significantly outperformed the state average of 84.5%. Its robotics team, Confidential 4125, competed against 55 of the top teams in Washington, Oregon and Alaska in the Pacific Northwest FIRST District Championships in 2025. The school offers career technical education courses in robotics, as well as in computer systems, woods and metals.

Kayak Public Transit buses and several U.S. routes and interstates

McNary is situated along Sixth Street, otherwise known as U.S. Route 730, which connects the neighborhood to Umatilla in the west and Cold Springs Junction in the east before crossing the border into Washington state. United States Route 395 branches off of the former, leading south to Power City, Charlestown and Hermiston before reaching Interstate 84. Interstate 82 is also nearby and serves as a faster route into Washington state. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation maintain the Kayak Public Transit system. Two of the system’s routes stop at the McNary Market and Deli; the Hermiston Hopper passes through McNary on its way from Irrigon into the Umatilla Reservation, while the Hermiston/Boardman Connector travels through Umatilla and McNary on its way from Boardman to Hermiston.

McNary Java Junkies and Russ’s Place Tavern serve McNary

Java Junkies sits across from the local Kayak Public Transit stop so that commuters can secure a fix of caffeine and sugar for their journey. Smoothies and a long list of iced coffee drinks are topped with a generous serving of whipped cream. Across the street, McNary Market and Deli is the area’s only gas station and convenience store. Farther north, Russ’s Place Tavern serves crispy appetizers, burgers and salads in a no-fuss setting. Columbia Harvest Foods, a grocery store, is about 3 miles away in Umatilla, near more dining options.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
