Named for 19th-century governor Juan Bautista Alvarado and built around an early-20th-century downtown, Union City’s Alvarado neighborhood is as rich in history as it is in conveniences. “It’s the combination of new and old,” says Gloria Ortega, Union City’s Economic Development Manager. “It’s a city people always come back to.” Alvarado covers the western half of Union City and, the historic buildings blend with midcentury homes and modern shopping centers.

Bird watching at the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve
Grassy pocket parks and vast natural areas are sprinkled throughout Alvarado. The Eden Landing Ecological Reserve is by far the largest public space. It stretches along the San Francisco Bay and offers 6,400 acres of hike-able marshland. The park is a favorite among bird watchers. Contempo Park, which sits in the center of the neighborhood, hosts Little League practices and features a basketball court, playground and several picnic tables. Old Alvarado Park stands out with its Spanish Mission-style gazebo and its Union City Farmers’ Market, held every Saturday. The SDES Portuguese Hall was founded in 1926 as a gathering place for Azorean immigrant fishermen and now hosts all-you-can-eat crab dinners, Thursday evening Bingo and many holiday and family events.

Smith Street serves as this community’s main thoroughfare.
