A small-town rural community home to nearby parks and local restaurants

Union City is a rural neighborhood, home to a small-town community that makes its own fun while enjoying the quiet life. The scenic Oklahoma landscape works as the neighborhood’s backdrop, where parks and nearby bodies of water can be explored on the weekends. Though the area is not home to established commerce centers, residents are provided with quick access to surrounding communities for daily amenities thanks to Route 81, which cuts through Union City’s center.

Mid-century homes and new custom builds

The residential area of downtown Union City is made up of small plots of land, each inhabited by a few homes. The grid-like streets share their space with ranch-style houses that sit atop yards no bigger than 0.5 acres and a railroad that falls through the middle of downtown. Most of the homes in the community were constructed in the mid-to-late 20th century, with the exception of newly built custom homes in rural parts of the neighborhood. These rural areas are home to sprawling fields that run parallel to the narrow roads, with horses and cattle found grazing through some. These scenic views are enjoyed by houses scattered along the main roads, which are home to long driveways and large yards. Those looking to purchase a house in Union City can expect a range from $160,000 for a four-bedroom home downtown to $775,000 for larger homes sitting atop 10-plus acres of land. Residents can also purchase a plot of land, ranging from $115,000 for a five-acre lot to $2 million for 138 acres.

Union City Park and nearby hunting

“Many residents enjoy Union City Park throughout the week, as well as the weekend,” explains Gina Dickerson, who has been a resident of Union City for more than two decades. Here, fun takes the form of a shaded playground with a nearby swing set and baseball games held at the Union City High School Baseball Field. A four-mile drive south along US-81 sits Bill Johnson Park, which is home to tennis and basketball courts, a frisbee golf course and pavilions for picnics. Many also enjoy hunting elk, deer and turkey in the Southern Plains from early October to late December.

Milkshakes from Dairy Mart

The majority of the shopping and dining opportunities are found in the downtown area, where an old-fashioned cheeseburger and milkshake can be picked up from Dairy Mart, “a staple of the community,” says Dickerson, which has been serving the area since 1959. A coffee can be picked from Riverview Farm Baking Company, while making the 5.5-mile drive north along US-81 to the nearest United Grocery Store. Those looking to retail shop can head the nearest Walmart Supercenter, a 13-mile drive east along I-40.

Passing trains

A railroad track that runs parallel to Route 81 cuts through the center of town. Though periodic, passing trains create a small amount of background noise for those close by. Potential homebuyers should consider other parts of the neighborhood if sensitive to this kind of sound.
