Union, Illinois, is the epitome of small-town America. Nestled between hundreds of acres of farmland 64 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, Union is a quaint, close-knit community with familiar faces around every corner. Known for its recognizable water tower and one of the most prominent railway museums in the entire country, Union was originally settled in the mid-19th century as a railway station before becoming a small trading post in the early 20th century. The neighborhood is dotted with ranch-style and Colonial revival homes that are a quick drive from local schools and shops. “Just outside town there are a number of farm properties, conservation lands and open spaces,” says Jorel Kilcullen, a broker with REMAX Connections II who has served the area for over ten years.

Mid-century traditional builds in rural Illinois
Most of the Union area’s homes were built throughout the early to mid-1900s and sat upon quarter-to-half-acre lots, with larger properties found east of Union’s quaint central area. Common house styles in the area include modest ranch-style homes, minimal traditional builds and Colonial Revivals. However, traveling east toward the area’s expansive nature preserve, there are Tudor cottages and modern traditional homes. Home prices surrounding Union’s central area on Main Street range from $150,000 to $250,000, with costs increasing toward the $400,000 range farther east where there are more modern builds and bigger lots.

Old taverns and American classics
Locals often stop for a bite to eat at Checker’s II, known for American classics and European-inspired dishes from burgers and barbeque ribs to schnitzel. A short walk north on Main Street will take you to Clasen’s Tavern. Originally established in 1900 and McHenry County’s oldest tavern, Clasen’s was able to survive the prohibition era by disguising itself as both an ice cream parlor and a post office. Today, Union residents visit Clasen’s Tavern to enjoy burgers and salads alongside a refreshing draft beer or cocktail. For Groceries, Sullivan’s Foods is only 2 ½ miles to the west, and large chains such as Walmart are located 10 miles to the east.

Local schools in Marengo
Union Parents may send their students to one of the many public schools in the Marengo or Woodstock areas. Students often start at Locust Elementary School, which earns a B-plus rating on Niche, and then move on to Marengo Community Middle School, which scores a B. The B-plus rated Marengo Community High School is the last stop for local students and provides them with a wide range of extracurricular options, from bass fishing to bowling.

The Pleasant Valley Conservation Area and Veteran’s Park
Traveling north on Main Street from the city center will lead to Veteran’s Park, where locals can use its playground or basketball court before enjoying a packed lunch under the park’s picnic pavilion. Union locals also enjoy proximity to the Pleasant Valley Conservation Area, which occupies over 2,000 acres of scenic woodlands and open fields. The conservation area is home to a fishing pond and more than 5 miles of trails, which “travel through several different habitats and vary in length and terrain” and is “packed and tracked for cross-country skiing,” according to Caitlynn Martinez-McWhorter, the marketing manager for the McHenry County Conservation District.

The largest collection of railway equipment in the US
Locals of the greater Chicago area know Union as the home of the Illinois Railway Museum, which features North America's largest collection of railway equipment. Visitors of the volunteer-run museum can enjoy a relaxing locomotive ride around the museum’s 100-acre campus before perusing the exhibits. Walking through the railway museum, there are historic locomotives and railway structures, electric trolley buses from across the United States and a wide variety of railway equipment. For more active fun, golf enthusiasts can head 8 miles toward Lakewood to find Crystal Woods Golf Club, where they can enjoy two public courses that guide players across green rolling hills and past serene ponds and tall trees.

Travelling along Route 176
Due to the sheer size of the neighborhood, cars are the main form of travel in Union. U.S. Grant Memorial Highway and Illinois Route 176 are the main roads that hug the neighborhood's outskirts and provide quick access to the larger McHenry County area. O’Hare International Airport is 45 miles to the west by downtown Chicago, and the Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital is 11 miles to the east.
The train runs through Union making it convenient for travel.
