Lycoming County township in the hills surrounding Williamsport
Upper Fairfield is a Lycoming County township in the hills just south of the Allegheny Mountains. With a population of about 1,800 people, the community feels very rural, but occasional developments along Pennsylvania Route 87 and the township's location 7 miles northeast of Williamsport offer a few suburban attributes as well. "It's a small town where everyone kind of knows who everyone is, and many people have been in their home there for a number of generations," says Chelsea Hill, secretary of Community Baptist Church in Upper Fairfield. She emphasizes, though, that not everyone in the township has lived there their whole lives: "There is a good mix of people from all over," she says. "I know a number of people who came to Williamsport for school and just liked it and stayed in the area."

Farmhouses and country roads, with more development along PA-87
Most of the land in Upper Fairfield consists of farmland among rolling hills and winding country roads. Farms with acres of fields are punctuated by farmhouses. That said, the land around PA-87 on Upper Fairfield's western side is relatively flatter and has a higher concentration of homes and businesses than the rest of the township. Some houses sit directly along the state highway, while others are in small subdivisions. Popular styles include ranches and split levels built in the latter half of the 20th century for between $250,000 and $350,000. Some older traditional and Colonial Revival homes built in the early 1900s cost between $100,000 and $200,000. Back Street, which branches off of PA-87, also has manufactured homes. Lycoming Creek runs parallel to PA-87, which creates some flood risk for homes along the thoroughfare.

Mountain views and waterfalls at Rider Park and Jacoby Falls
There are several trailheads in the mountains just north of Upper Fairfield. Hill recommends Rider Park and Jacoby Falls for relaxed hikes. "Those are big popular trails. I like to take my kids, so I look for easy ones." Hikers at Jacoby Falls trek 1.6 miles up to the waterfall, where the rushing water falls over smooth rocks and moss. The waterfall turns into countless icicles during winter freezes, making the hike an adventure in any season. Both Rider Park and Jacoby Falls offer wooded trails along creeks, but Rider Park is the spot for panoramic views of the rolling green Allegheny Mountains.

Montoursville Area School District serves Upper Fairfield
Children in Upper Fairfield typically attend Loyalsock Valley Elementary School, which has a B grade from Niche, and C.E. McCall Middle School, which has a B-plus. However, due to aging infrastructure and declining enrollment, the district has considered closing Loyalsock Valley Elementary School and consolidating the student population to Lyter Elementary School. No final decision has been made as of fall 2024. Older students attend B-rated Montoursville Area Senior High School. The high school offers career and technical education in subjects such as early childhood education, culinary arts and construction technology.

A country bar and market on PA-87
At Creekside Country Market along PA-87, locals can pick up breakfast sandwiches, hoagies and ice cream to enjoy on their way north to local trailheads and parks. A minute down the road, Loyalsock Hotel is a country bar with a patio and live music almost every night. Also on PA-87, Eder's Ice Cream serves generous scoops of handmade ice cream with toppings like sprinkles and chocolate syrup. For groceries, Walmart and Weis on Loyalsock Avenue are both about 9 miles south in Montoursville. Marshalek's Fruit Farm and H&B Farm to You Meats L.L.C. are among the farmer-owned businesses selling locally grown and produced food in Upper Fairfield.

Major events nearby in Williamsport
Since Upper Fairfield is very rural, there's not much going on in the way of events. However, locals aren't far from cultural attractions and events in Williamsport. "People who grew up here sometimes say there's nothing to do, but I enjoy going out hiking and going downtown." Downtown Williamsport, about 7 miles southeast, hosts regular events like Williamsport First Friday. During the first Friday of each month, the city closes part of downtown to car traffic and welcomes local musicians, artists and vendors to perform, display and sell their work. South Williamsport, about 8 miles southwest, also draws in hundreds of thousands of visitors annually for the Little League World Series. Twenty teams from around the world compete for the championship title over 10 days in August.
Fracking in Upper Fairfield and getting around
Upper Fairfield has eight natural gas wells throughout the township for fracking, which can cause pollution. Additionally, because fracking is water intensive, water tank trucks driving up and down country roads can cause some traffic and kick up dirt.
Upper Fairfield is car-dependent and does not have any public transportation. Pennsylvania Route 87 connects drivers southwest to Williamsport and northeast across the state. The closest airport is Williamsport Regional Airport, about 9 miles away in Montoursville. Several hospitals are within about a 20-minute drive, including UPMC Muncy 11 miles southeast and UPMC Williamsport 12 miles southwest. Upper Fairfield has a CAP Index crime score of 1, well below the national average of 4.
