Between Dayton and Columbus

About 40 miles from Columbus and Dayton, Urbana is a quaint, historic city of about 11,000 in west central Ohio. It was founded in the early 1800s and has several listings on the National Register of Historic Places. Multiple markers around the city tell the story of its growth and role in history, from the growth of railroads to the Underground Railroad. “We came in 2016 to restore a house, we ended up moving, and now we operate three Airbnbs here,” says Lee Ann Steed, a Realtor with Red 1 Realty. “It’s a 40- to 50-minute drive to Columbus, and it’s a different world. People will wave at you.”

The historic city has modern job opportunities. Honeywell Aerospace, Weidmann Electrical Technology and Rittal Corporation, a manufacturer of industrial and IT enclosures, have large Urbana facilities.

Events highlight historic Urbana

The Monument Square Historic District is Urbana's downtown retail hub at the intersection of Main, Miami, and Scioto streets. It's also where one of the city's biggest one-day events, the Simon Kenton Chili Cook-Off and Hoopla Parade, takes place. Named after one of Urbana's founders, the festival is held on the fourth Saturday in September.

The Scioto Street Historic District consists of four blocks of homes east of downtown, including 19th-century Queen Annes and Victorians, and houses built in the early 1900s. Urbana's eight buildings and two historic districts noted on the National Register of Historic Places are important to local events and culture. The area's history is told at the Champaign County Historical Society Museum, where photographs and other artifacts are displayed. The museum also hosts the city’s Oktoberfest celebration site, with over 70 arts and crafts and food vendors. John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, has roots in Urbana, where he planted apple seeds in the early 1800s. His history in the area is displayed at the Johnny Appleseed Educational Center and Museum.
