Hiking among the pines
Away from the heat of the desert, this is where locals can find a peaceful, retreat-like place to practice yoga amongst the trees. Just a short walk or bike ride away from most homes are intersecting hiking paths, like the Deer Springs Trailhead, which stretch along rushing streams, through thick forests and into grassy fields. It’s easy to find a choice campground or a spot to enjoy lakeside views. The nearby Idyllwild Nature Center provides educational programming about the region’s history and local wildlife. Pine Cove also contains landmarks like the Donaldson Futuro House, a spherical hillside home preserved as an architectural wonder of the American Space Age.Shopping and dining in nearby Idyllwild
Idyllwild, just 3 miles down the road, is where residents find local shopping and dining. Folks can browse the extensive vinyl collection at the Record Collector, try on some new clothes from Wooley’s and pick up fresh produce and groceries at Idyllwild Village Market. For a meal out, the Lumber Mill Bar & Grill is a friendly neighborhood pub with live entertainment and outdoor seating in addition to savory pub fare and a happy hour. Fratello’s Ristorante & Pizzeria, a casual, locally-owned Italian spot, offers pizza, pasta and sandwiches.Rustic and cozy mountainside homes
Pine Cove is comprised of single-family homes privately spaced out along winding mountain roads. Styles are rustic and fit for the mountainside, featuring large windows and cozy interiors. Craftsmans, midcentury moderns and log cabins are available, in addition to cottages and hillside bungalows set on stilts overlooking the trees. Single-family homes range from about $249,000 to $826,000. Manufactured homes range from about $18,000 to $200,000.One main road: Highway 243
Highway 243 is the single main road in Pine Cove. Palm Springs International Airport is about 47 miles away. Hemet Global Medical Center is about 25 miles away. The area is great for hiking, but not for pedestrians, bike lanes or buses.Low crime score, high wildfire risk
According to the CAP Index, Pine Cove has a very low crime score, with all categories scoring a 1 or 2 compared to the national average of 4.Pine Cove residents experience authentic mountain living; that means when it snows, roads are not cleared by the county. It also means that there is a wildfire risk to Pine Cove and Idyllwild. There is one main road between both communities, and when that road closes due to a natural hazard or road repairs, it leaves residents vulnerable. Between 2009 and 2019, Idyllwild was evacuated three times due to fires. Additionally, the construction materials of manufactured homes make them particularly susceptible to fires. However, there is a fire department in Pine Cove, which ensures appropriate amounts of vegetation surround area properties. The Mountain Communities Fire Safe Council, also headquartered in Pine Cove, provides property owners grant funding for fire prevention projects.
Public schools located down the mountain
The only school within the bounds of the neighborhood is Idyllwild Arts Academy, a private high school rated A-plus on Niche serving Grades 9 through 12. The next closest is Idyllwild Montessori School, a private school teaching prekindergarten through Grade 9. The public schools are at least 22 miles away, going westward down the mountain: Valle Vista Elementary School, rated C-plus; Dartmouth Middle, rated B-minus; and Hemet High, rated B-plus. Hemet High offers dual enrollment classes in English and math through Mount San Jacinto College.
