Suburban living in East Vallejo
Somerset Highlands is a quiet, all-residential neighborhood between Benicia and downtown Vallejo containing single-family homes built after 1970. “Somerset Highlands is close to all the shopping, like Costco and the strip mall,” says Cathy Rojas, RE/MAX Realtor who specializes in the local market. “It’s very accessible to the golf course, downtown and the state park. And there’s a brand-new subdivision coming up.” The neighborhood is shaped like a diamond, with new homes under construction in the southern tip near Interstate 780 and Benicia State Recreation Area. Heading north, the elevation rises, and hiking trails overlook the neighborhood below. Somerset Highlands is 39 miles from San Francisco and 27 miles from Oakland. Its CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
The Somerset Highlands neighborhood traces its roots back to the mid-20th century.

Newer homes east of Vallejo
Driveways tend to be short in this East Vallejo neighborhood, but streets are broad enough that people can easily drive between cars parked on both sides of the street. “For homes built in the ‘70s and up, East Vallejo is your best bet. Vallejo’s made up of pockets: the east side has newer homes, while the south and north have 1930s, 1940s and 1950s architecture,” Rojas says. The northern part of Somerset Highlands contains split-level and ranch-style homes built in the 1970s on hilly terrain. The southern half contains Spanish-style and New Traditional homes built in the 2000s on flat streets. Cascade at Waterstone, a new subdivision, is under construction, scheduled to be completed in late 2024. Prices range between about $600,000 and $900,000, depending on home age and size.

The golf club is north of the neighborhood, surrounded by rolling green hills, and has two public 18-hole courses and a driving range. At Highlands Park, a flat walking path loops around the central open green space. This park also contains a playground, a basketball court, barbecue grills, a bocce ball court and covered picnic pavilions; one pavilion is first-come, first-served and the other two are available for rent. From Channing Circle Park, which is directly west of the neighborhood, hikers can access the Rollye Wiskerson Trail, a dog-friendly path that stretches east past several Benicia parks. The trails above Channing Circle Park provide unobstructed views of the golden-tangerine sunset over Somerset Highlands. The Rollye Wiskerson Trail ultimately leads to Lake Herman, a large recreational area home to turtles, fish, poppies and blue bonnets. South of the neighborhood, Benicia State Recreation Area has more than 2 miles of paths for cycling, running and horseback riding.
