Before there was the city of Vancouver, there was the fort. And today, the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site – which was once the headquarters for the Hudson's Bay Company's Pacific Northwest fur trading operations – sits at the heart of a neighborhood where you'll find a collection of older houses with easy access to shops, restaurants, Interstate 5, and the Vancouver waterfront.
Walking through the Hudson's Bay neighborhood's limited residential area, you'll come across Craftsman style houses with their arts and crafts finishes from the 1910s and 1920s, smaller, square-shaped bungalows and minimalist traditional houses from the 1940s, and contemporary houses with modern design touches built within the past five years. These houses sit atop 3,000- to 8,000-square-foot lots on sidewalk-lined streets that make an honest attempt at following the gridded pattern you'd expect to see in an older neighborhood at the center of a city. And some of these houses, particularly those on East Sixth Street, offer a view of the Columbia River from a 60-foot-high terrace that the Missoula Floods cut into Vancouver's terrain when its waters rushed across the area 12,000 to 15,000 years ago. Most of these houses range between $300,000 and $650,000 apiece, but the neighborhood's larger, 5-bedroom houses or houses on the terrace could easily fetch more than $800,000.
Housing in Hudson's Bay is limited to a 110-acre area surrounded by East Mill Plain Boulevard, East Reserve Street, East Fifth Street, and East Grand Boulevard in the neighborhood's northeast corner. Most of its remaining 600 acres is a historic district that includes Fort Vancouver, where you can learn more about the city's days as a fur trading post, the Vancouver Barracks, which served as a U.S. Army base from 1849 to 2011, Pearson Field, the oldest general aviation airport in the Pacific Northwest, and Officers Row, a collection of rehabilitated houses from the mid- to late-1800s where commanding officers at Fort Vancouver and the Vancouver Barracks like President Ulysses S. Grant used to live. The neighborhood also encompasses an industrial area sandwiched between State Route 14 and the Columbia River and the Grand Central Retail Center, where you'll find a Fred Meyer grocery store, The Rock Wood Fired Pizza restaurant, Thatcher's Coffee, and Cecilia, a brunch spot known for entrees like steelhead hash and an extensive breakfast cocktail menu.
Hudson's Bay is also home to Memory-Mill Plain Park, a collection of fields used by the Fort Vancouver Little League and the Vancouver West Soccer Club, and the quarter-acre Hazel Hart Park, where you'll find a small playground and swing set. It's also the starting point for the two-mile Discovery Historic Loop Trail, which takes you around the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and other landmarks in downtown Vancouver, and the Columbia River Renaissance Trail, which takes you through the city's historic waterfront area. Neighborhood children can learn more about these sites when they attend Harney Elementary School, one of four elementary schools participating in the Vancouver School District Spanish-English Dual Language Program that teaches both languages to students throughout the day. From here, they'll move on to Discovery Middle School and Hudson's Bay High School.
The Hudson's Bay neighborhood is more than a place to learn about the people who settled in the Pacific Northwest. With a collection of older houses close to restaurants, shops, and historic sites, this pocket of central Vancouver is also a great place to call home.
