Because Mill Plain encompasses so much area, it is divided into several school zones. Children may either attend Emerald Elementary or Harmony Elementary School—both receive a B grade by Niche—or Illahee Elementary School, which receives a B-plus. Middle schoolers are divided into the Pacific Middle School or Shahala Middle School zones, the former receiving a B-minus and the latter a B-plus. Pacific Middle School offers various summer sports camps, while Union High School was determined to be the 10th-best high school for athletes in the state, according to Niche. Earning an A-minus, the high school helps its students identify career interests, goals and action plans through its High School and Beyond program, a requirement to graduate.Skating, dogs and gardens at Pacific Community Park
Two of the community’s largest green spaces surround the site of the Hewlett Packard research campus. Pacific Community Park, on the west side, encompasses 56 acres, a significant portion of which is the Dakota Memorial Dog Park. Canines can play leash-free in the grassy and sandy patches of the park, and owners may be relieved to find a rinse-off area near the dog park. Bees levitate around the park’s natural gardens, making gentle landings on the plush centers of the sunflowers. Daffodils, lavender bushes, herbs and native plants fill the air with different aromas, offering more opportunities for pollination. On the other side of the green space, a skate and BMX park features edgy characters spray painted into the graffitied bowl. The park also features a baseball diamond and, as of 2024, has pickleball courts. Harmony Sports Complex lies on the opposite side of the construction site, which features nine soccer fields and six softball fields for athletes of all skill levels. In addition to the two largest green spaces, several other smaller neighborhood parks—like Fisher Basin Park and Lacamas Prairie—make Mill Plain an outdoor recreation-filled place. “When you go on the weekends, and the weather is good, there are always people outside,” Muscarella says.Access to two waterfronts via Highway 14
Both 162nd Avenue and 192nd Avenue run along the sides of Mill Plain, with both streets containing major retailers like Costco, Fred Meyer and the New Seasons Market. Both avenues also lead to Highway 14, which runs along the Columbia River and brings drivers to the waterfront developments of Vancouver and Washougal. The community is not too far from Interstate 205 either, which takes commuters to Downtown Portland in about half an hour.La Provence Boulangerie and Patisserie
A Walmart Supercenter, a Costco and The Home Depot border the neighborhood on its southeast corner. Across from the Walmart, along 192nd Avenue, Café Yumm! serves various renditions of its iconic, original Yumm! Bowl. The chain also sells bottles of its Yumm! Sauce for those who hope to recreate the bowls at home. Further south, along Mill Plain Road, Portland-area chain La Provence Boulangerie and Patisserie is known for its French-style pastries and desserts. Glistening tarts garnished with fresh berries, flaky croissants, Napoleon cake and Pavlovas wait for someone to take them home from behind the glass display. Patrons stay a while to enjoy French toast, eggs Benedicts, omelets and freshly squeezed orange juice in black rattan bistro chairs and an airy interior that features a white-tile kitchen.
