Old growth trees in Oakbrook
Oakbrook is a squirrel’s dream.
Between the 80-foot-tall old-growth oak trees at Oakbrook Park and the oak trees that line the fairways at the Royal Oaks Country Club’s golf course, this east Vancouver neighborhood has more acorns these bushy-tailed animals can stash for the winter than any other part of the city.
Shaded streets with single family and condo options
Its ranch-style and contemporary houses are shaded even further by the Douglas fir trees and flowering deciduous trees their owners may have planted in their 6,000- to 10,000-square-foot lots. The neighborhood’s three-bedroom houses typically fetch $300,000 to $550,000, while those with four or more bedrooms range from $450,000 to $700,000. The condominium and town house complexes on the neighborhood’s perimeter offer a slightly more affordable option with two-bedroom units that fetch $250,000 to $350,000.
Outdoor recreation from golfing to a nature preserve
Oakbrook’s narrow, suburban streets barely run for half a mile in any direction before they run into a green space and must make a sharp turn or simply come to an end. Besides the golf course and Oakbrook Park, you can commune with nature on a quick walk through the Beaver Marsh Nature Preserve at the neighborhood’s northern edge or the Meadowbrook Marsh Park at its southern tip. There’s even a large, undeveloped natural area called Meadowbrook North that follows Burnt Bridge Creek from the golf course to Meadowbrook Marsh.
Nearby supermarkets and dozens of local businesses
And while you’d expect an area with so many trees to be isolated in the middle of the forest, this neighborhood is anything but. Its northern boundary, Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard, takes you from the golf course to the Vancouver Plaza’s Target in under five minutes. Northeast Burton Road takes you from the center of this neighborhood to the Northeast 29th Street Safeway in even less time. This puts more than a dozen shops and restaurants like Grady’s Public House or Kim’s Grill Teriyaki at your fingertips.
Vancouver School District and Evergreen Public Schools
The Oakbrook neighborhood is split between the Vancouver School District and the territory managed by Evergreen Public Schools. Children on the western edge of this boundary line, which follows Burnt Bridge Creek, will attend Ogden Elementary School, McGlothlin Middle School, and Fort Vancouver High School in the Vancouver School District. Those who live on the east side of the line will attend Evergreen Public Schools’ Fircrest Elementary, Cascade Middle School, and Evergreen High School. All six schools received similar grades on Niche.com, and you can request a transfer from one school district to another with a simple online form.
A convenient location and living among the trees in Oakbrook
Oakbrook’s trees do more than give its residents some shade. They offer something to look at on the horizon, something to smell when they bloom in the spring, and a good place to get exercise or walk the dog. Add this to the east Vancouver neighborhood’s convenient location, and you have a great place to call home.
