Shumway offers quiet living close to Vancouver’s waterfront
In Shumway, Vancouver, you'll find yourself in a predominantly residential part of the city while just blocks from all the excitement of local shops and restaurants lining Main Street in Uptown. "The walkability to Uptown is definitely a big draw for people who move to Shumway," Says Mark Long, real estate agent with Luxe Realty, LLC. "And Vancouver as a whole is a nice place to live because it's a little undiscovered and has a cool waterfront that has put the city on the map." Most people who hear Vancouver think of Canada rather than Washington. And because it's almost like a hidden gem, Long, who has lived here most of his life, says homes are much cheaper than most places on the West Coast.
Historic homes sit on tree-lined blocks with modest lot sizes
Shumway's grid-pattern blocks feature a variety of single-family homes built from the early to mid-1900s. You'll find a lot of small bungalows and ranch styles originally built for military housing. They start at around $450,000 and range up to $750,000 for newly renovated properties. The neighborhood also features some larger 2,000 to 3,000-square-foot American Foursquares, which sell for around $800,000 to $1 million. While most homes are fixed on quaint lots of about a tenth of an acre, the neighborhood is still adorned by immense greenery with lots of surrounding Maple trees and towering Douglas firs.
Public schools have magnet programs and arts education
Kindergarten through fifth-grade students are split between Hough and Lincoln Elementary Schools, both of which receive a C plus grade from Niche. They go on to C-rated Discovery Middle School and C-plus-rated Hudson's Bay High School. The high school is known for its two magnet programs, including Careers in Education and Habitat & Civil Engineering. Students also have the option of attending Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, ranked by Niche as the ninth-best school for the arts in Washington. The school serves sixth through twelfth-grade students and frequently puts on theater productions for the community.
Local parks provide kid-friendly fun and summer entertainment
You can enjoy the outdoors at Shumway Park, a municipal square with an open grassy field and a playground for kids to enjoy. However, most of the outdoor fun happens downtown at Ester Short Park, which also has a playground and a stage used for live concerts during annual events such as Vancouver Summer Brewfest.
Main Street has limited dining but unique local businesses
Main Street runs on the neighborhood's west side, leading to Uptown and Downtown Vancouver. The section of Main Street in Shumway has fewer places to dine out, but there is one new business drawing large crowds. Firehouse Axes takes you inside an old firehouse built in 1932 and gives you a space to test your axe-throwing skills while hanging out with friends over beer and pub grub like their famous Totchos, a spin on nachos but with tater tots. Shumway is home to another unique business – Papa Murphy's, a national chain where you bring an uncooked pizza home and bake it yourself. Meanwhile, if you walk just south to Uptown, you're greeted by dozens of bars, restaurants and cafes, so you have plenty of nearby options. Shumway is also home to a Safeway for all of your grocery needs, with plenty of other big box stores only a few miles away.
Quick access to I-5 makes day trips and commutes easy
With easy access to Interstate 5 on the east side of Shumway, you can easily get around, which, according to Long, is one of the best perks of living here. "You want to go to the ocean? That's an hour. The mountains? That's an hour. Portland? It's just a few minutes away. You're in the hub of everything you want to do."
