Cozy community where locals know each other by name
In the heart of rural Michigan, 30 miles east of Lansing, is the quaint and quiet community of Vermontville. With an area of 1 square mile and fewer than 1,000 residents, most community members know their neighbors, and it’s rare to not see a familiar face walking through town. Village locals sacrifice proximity to big box stores and other amenities for peaceful streets and countryside living.
Ample acreage and century-old Victorians and farmhouses
The community began to develop in the mid-19th century, with the town’s past represented in the century-old Victorians and farmhouses surrounding the village center. These homes sit on half-acre lots, and, as homes get further from Main Street, properties reach sizes of 5 acres and above and ranch-style houses with large front porches are common. The average home in Vermontville costs around $180,000, around $40,000 less than the Michigan state average. Empty half-acre lots and fixer-uppers in need of significant renovations can be listed for less than $80,000, while the market’s high-end features three-bedroom Colonial Revivals with 25 acres priced at $550,000.

Diner grub and pub fare along Main Street
Vermontville has a small selection of local eateries along Main Street, including JoLei’s Diner, a farm-themed restaurant open for three meals a day. Breakfast menu items include the corn beef skillet and waffles topped with strawberries and cream, with burgers, country-fried steak and fried chicken sandwiches on the lunch and dinner menu. The Maple Leaf Inn is two doors down and is a popular spot for an evening drink alongside a pizza and small pub bites. Residents can drive four miles southwest to Nashville for a few more restaurant options or to pick up their groceries and day-to-day essentials at Carl’s Supermarket. Folks can peruse the walls and shelves of Vermontville Variety for antiques, used furniture, glassware and more.
