Vilonia is a rural bedroom community but stands alone for schools
In central Arkansas, the small town of Vilonia benefits from proximity to the state capital of Little Rock and the growing city of Conway. While many residents commute out of town for work, Vilonia stands apart for its public school system, which is a main attraction for families looking for a smaller student body and small-town connections. "It's a small country community, so there are a lot of churches, a lot of school events and a lot of people that want to live in a more rural area where they can spread out and buy a house a little cheaper than in Conway but with the convenient access to Conway and Little Rock," says Sarah Keathley, Realtor with NextHome Local Realty.
New homes reflect Vilonia's growth
Acreage and affordability are two appeals for Vilonia, with a median price of about $220,000 for single-family homes. According to Keathley, the housing options include everything from mobile homes with land to established properties in mature neighborhoods and new homes communities. Since destructive tornadoes hit Vilonia in 2011 and 2014, there has been a significant uptick in construction. Many neighborhoods have newer streetscapes with homes dating from 1990 onward. Construction is ongoing, and new builds are available in the up-and-coming Hill Farm subdivision.
Vilonia School District offers a more personal learning environment
Vilonia is a popular choice for its smaller school system. "The difference between a bigger school district with lots of kids and a smaller one is the students get a little more attention and care," says Keathley, who grew up in Vilonia and worked as a teacher before entering the real estate world. Vilonia School District earns an overall B from Niche and includes a preschool, primary, elementary, intermediate, junior high and high school. Teens can earn early college credits through the University of Central Arkansas and Arkansas Tech University.
Parks, sports fields and swimming holes offer outdoor fun
Locals enjoy parks and recreation amenities such as Soaring Eagle Memorial Park, featuring a playground, picnic shelter and baseball complex. Weaver Family Park has a fishing pond with a pier and nearby soccer and softball fields, home to youth and adult leagues. In 2025, the city and the Vilonia Community Development Corporation revived Eagle Fest, a favorite Vilonia tradition. After a 12-year hiatus, the event returned with a 5K race, a fishing derby, live music and local business vendors at Weaver Family Park. About 10 miles from town, Indian Lakes Resort is a popular swimming hole with a water slide.
Main Street sees slow but steady growth in shops and eateries
Shopping and dining options are limited but growing along Main Street. According to Keathley, many businesses did not return after the 2014 tornado, but the past 5 years have seen some new additions. A handful of local and fast-food restaurants, including a new Taco Bell, line the thoroughfare. Harps was rebuilt after the tornado and today serves as the town's main grocery store. Think Coffee serves signature espresso drinks and breakfast sandwiches via drive-through. Simple Simon's is a casual Italian spot with a salad bar, and El Rancho Mexican Restaurant serves traditional south-of-the-border cuisine.
Highway 64 bypass is a boon for commuters
Vilonia sits about 15 miles east of Conway and 40 miles north of Little Rock. Highway 64 is the main east-west Route through town, and the recent addition of the Vilonia bypass has been a boon for commuters. "That has made it easier for people to move out here because people commuters can hop on the bypass and be in Conway in 10 minutes or the I-40 entrance in 20," Keathley says. Residents rely mainly on cars, as public transportation is lacking. Conway Regional Medical Clinic provides primary care services in Vilonia, while Conway Regional Medical Center offers emergency care about 15 miles away.
Schools offer tornado shelters after hours
Tornadoes are a risk in Vilonia, which experienced a significant EF2 event in 2011 and an EF4 event in 2014. The Vilonia school system has four storm shelters available to staff and students during school hours and community members after school hours.
