Small-town living near Fort Knox draws military families

Vine Grove was named for the wild grapevines native to the green hills of northern Kentucky. The community offers a mix of small-town living and country quiet in the rural counties of Meade and Hardin. “Proximity to Fort Knox is the main draw – lots of military families,” says Veronica Paulk, a real estate agent with Schuler Bauer Real Estate Services. “It tends to be less expensive than surrounding cities because it’s so small. See – what happened was – we had farmers who sold off a hundred acres or so, and so we started getting little pockets of neighborhoods.” Between fields of soybeans, corn and tobacco, Vine Grove offers slow-paced, affordable living.

Optimist Park hosts the city’s popular bluegrass music festival

The city of Vine Grove maintains a few parks, including Vine Grove Dog Park. Scheible Park and Canaday Field are the sports hubs, with ballfields, a soccer field and a basketball court. Golfers get tee times at Lincoln Trail Country Club, which has a public championship course on the community’s south side. The star of the recreational scene is Optimist Park, which for the past 26 years has hosted the Vine Grove Bluegrass Music Festival. “It's literally banjo music," Paulk says. "A lot of people come for it – it’s crazy – they book a year in advance. That park is 40 acres, and it gets packed!”

Vintage cottages and newer builds offer varied price points

The median price of homes here is just under $280,000, down about 3% from last year. The area has a variety of vintage and contemporary homes, with older properties typically priced lower. Historic houses here range from late 1800s and early 1900s cottages to midcentury brick ranch-style homes. These established residences tend to run from under $50,000 to around $350,000. Newer homes, such as Colonial Revivals and New Traditional snout houses from the early 2000s, cost between $110,000 and $665,000. Paulk says most properties here are safe from flood zones, but those along creeks may require flood insurance for a federally backed mortgage. Vine Grove’s annual rainfall averages over 40 inches. Summer high temperatures average around 80 degrees. The area’s winters have an average low of almost 30 degrees. The area is also vulnerable to tornadoes.

Hardin and Meade County high schools have distinct strengths

Vine Grove is split between two school districts, and both offer inter- and intra-district open enrollment. Hardin County Schools receives a B from Niche, while Meade County Schools gets a B-minus. Hardin County’s North Hardin High School earns a B and holds the No. 4 spot on Niche’s list of the state’s standout high schools. It is sought after for its strong Army JROTC program. Meade County High School, graded C-plus, also has a JROTC program, but is better known for its active, community-oriented chapter of the National FFA.

Hiking, fishing and wildlife watching in the Knobs

Vine Grove is a short drive from the Knobs, a Kentucky region known and named for its hilly, highland topography, ancient caprock preserved below. Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area sits between the Knobs and the Ohio River Valley, offering upland hikes and hunts as well as some prime fishing across more than 2,200 acres. Saunders Springs Preserve covers a smaller section of the Knobs, roughly 26 acres, but plenty of wildlife, hiking trails and historic intrigue are packed into its dense forest of hardwoods and pines.

More commercial offerings are roughly 10 miles away in Radcliff. The city’s main strip, U.S. Route 31W, is lined with chain stores, including Walgreens and Walmart.
