Being far out in the countryside has its perks – in Virgil, you get to enjoy the peace and serenity of living on a farm while still being a quick drive to civilization and any retail you might need. Homes may be spaced out, but everyone in the neighborhood can gather in town. “It has a small-town community feel where neighbors help neighbors and look out for each other,” says Tom Vierig, a Managing Broker and Owner of Castle View Real Estate.
Virgil acts as a township, where almost the entire neighborhood is rural and made up of farmland. A tiny town center contains all the area’s commercial businesses, and homes are either located in small pocket streets or on their own plot of land. Despite how spread out the area is, Highway 64, Highway 38 and Highway 47 all cut across the neighborhood and connect Virgil to the other towns nearby.
Homes throughout Virgil come in many shapes with a lot of land. Ranch-style homes in the neighborhood are a bit smaller and older, which is why they usually cost around $170,000 to $375,000. For something a bit more modern, you can find split levels near the town center. Farmhouse-style and Tudor-inspired homes with wrap-around porches are found more out in the country for anywhere between $350,000 to $420,000. If you want a lot of land, farm properties with over 10 acres are available for $690,000 to $975,000, along with vacant lots that have room for new construction.
Families living in the area can send their little ones to Lily Lake Grade School. The elementary school has an A-minus grade on Niche and has received an Excellence Award for Exemplary Academic Performance from the state of Illinois. Prairie Knolls Middle School also has an A-minus Niche grade and above-average test scores. From there, students can attend Sycamore High School. Rated No. 2 in Best Public High Schools in Delkab County, Sycamore High has a B-minus Niche grade, dual credit opportunities and a reputable athletics program.
Residents who enjoy the outdoors will love all that the countryside has to offer in Virgil. In addition to the beautiful rolling hills, the Elburn Forest Preserve is nearby with its iconic old stone shelter. As one of Kane County’s oldest preserves, Elburn Forest Preserve is full of mature oak and hickory trees, plus acres of grassy fields. Go for a walk along the dirt trails and be on the lookout for Fox and Gray squirrels. Kuipers Family Farm is a farmers market on the other side of Highway 38 that sells produce and provides great family-fun experiences. “They have a lot going on there spring through fall. In the spring, they have a tulip walk that’s really cool,” Vierig says. For something a little more exciting, residents can visit Sycamore Speedway for stock-car racing and demolition derbies.
While Virgil itself doesn’t have much in terms of retail shopping, residents can make the 6-mile drive into Elburn for their essentials. “The location in general opens you up to many family activities, shopping and entertainment,” Vierig says. The intersection of Lincoln Highway and Main Street has a shopping center with a Jewel-Osco for groceries and Walgreens for prescriptions. Further into downtown, Main Street is lined with restaurants and bars. Grab a bite to eat at Knuckleheads Tavern or Eddie Gaedel Pub & Grill. According to Vierig, many residents will travel the 12.7 miles into downtown St. Charles for a weekend shopping trip and its plethora of entertainment options. If you’d rather stay close to home, Chucks is a bar and grille that acts as the town’s local watering hole. Meet up with friends to enjoy beers and burgers.
Living in Virgil, you can get away from all the hustle and bustle and enjoy the quiet countryside while still being close to what you need.
