Lake Christopher has been a Virginia Beach neighborhood for over 50 years
Lake Christopher is the namesake of a 60-acre manmade pond in Virginia Beach and the suburban neighborhood surrounding it. The neighborhood was formed in 1974 and consists of roughly 360 single-family homes and is maintained by the Lake Christopher Homes Association. Locals can access the lake for leisure while living just minutes from Regent University and downtown Virginia Beach. “It’s well-loved and well-established; some residents have sold their house, just to buy a different house in the neighborhood,” says Lana Cary, a Virginia Beach local and real estate agent with Howard Hanna. “The community is close-knit. They have a strong, respected homeowners’ association, a garden club and many activities, including holiday gatherings such as Fourt h of July that involve the entire community.”
An established market of contemporary-style homes
The community's homes range from $450,000 to $550,000 and vary by square footage and lot size. Most properties were developed in the ‘70s and ‘80s in ranch and contemporary styles and have three to five bedrooms. “Lake Christopher was one of the first contemporary home communities in Virginia Beach,” Cary says. “The home styles are different here; homes are more open and have earth-tone themes.” Residents who need to make repairs and remodels must ensure that any changes adhere to the HOA’s zoning bylaws. Most homes branch off Lake Christopher Drive, the looping road surrounding the lake, and pedestrians are shaded by a canopy of front yard trees, comforting for the humid Virginia summers.

Locals have direct access to the lake for swimming and boating
"The spring-fed lake is a huge draw,” Cary says. “Residents enjoy boating, fishing and swimming. There are two sandy beaches, three parks and two playgrounds, greatly enhancing the residents' quality of life.” Lake Christopher is open to swimming and boating with some restrictions. Residents are allowed to set off on sailboats, kayaks and small electric motorboats or swim at designated zones. All the neighborhood parks are private, restricted to residents and their guests. South of the neighborhood is Stumpy Lake Natural Area, featuring over a mile of trails and a 278-acre lake for kayaking or fishing for bass and channel catfish.

Contestants paddle on a human-powered boat of their choice across the lake, then bike three laps around the lake and finish with a one-lap run. The Patriotic Parade and Fourth of July Picnic include food trucks and a parade around Lake Christopher Drive during the day, with fireworks viewing and DJs in the evening.
