Sandbridge sits on a narrow peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and Back Bay. It’s known for its quieter atmosphere than what you’ll experience at the Virginia BeachOceanfront, about 15 miles away. There are a few shops and restaurants in the community, and the closest shopping center is less than 8 miles away. Sandbridge has a variety of housing options, from modern penthouse condos with stunning bay or ocean views to quaint beach cottages and grand oceanfront coastal-style homes with eight bedrooms. Condos range from the mid-$300,000s to the mid-$900,000s. “The feel of Sandbridge is more of a private beach than the actual Virginia Beach oceanfront, and most of the homes are located on or within walking distance of the beach, which is nice,” says John Fox, a lifelong Virginia Beach resident, the Student Activities Administrator for Virginia Beach Middle School and a part-time real estate agent. “Sandbridge is more of a rental area. Homebuyers tend to purchase either second homes or investment homes instead of year-round homes because there’s so much demand in the rental market there.”

Highly rated public and private schools serve Sandbridge
The community is within the Virginia Beach City Public Schools district. “The schools are excellent,” Fox says. “They’re definitely a draw for families who want to live in Sandbridge 12 months of the year.” Assigned schools include Red Mill Elementary School in Virginia Beach Central and Princess Anne Middle School in Princess Anne, both of which receive A ratings from Niche. Students can move on to Floyd E. Kellam High School, also with an A rating. The school is known for its nationally recognized music education program. The A-plus-rated Saint John the Apostle Catholic School is a nearby private option.

From chill beach days to adventurous hikes
Wide, uncrowded beaches line the Atlantic side of Sandbridge, where full-time residents and vacationers can spend hours relaxing on the sand, surfing or swimming. But there’s more to do here besides going to the beach. Little Island Park at the southern end of the community features a fishing pier, picnic areas and tennis courts. Kayaking and hiking are popular pastimes at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Further south is False Cape State Park, accessible only by foot, bicycle or boat. It has primitive camping and miles of trails. If you’re a golfer, the public Hell’s Point Golf Club is a short drive away and features an 18-hole course surrounded by nature.

Before hitting the beach, locals like to stop by the Sandbridge Seaside Market, a small but well-stocked, locally-owned convenience store with a laidback coastal vibe. Many often flock to the market to fill up their coolers or grab a dozen of their notoriously tasty doughnuts. “They have the best homemade donuts,” Fox says. “I stop by the market for donuts whenever I go surfing in Sandbridge. They’re delicious.” For more extensive shopping excursions, residents drive to Virginia Beach Central, where they can shop at numerous big-box stores, including Target and Walmart Supercenter. There are a few restaurants on the peninsula. You can enjoy a meal of spicy street tacos and frosty margaritas at José Tequilas Mexican Grill and Bar or a fried shrimp basket and live music at the waterside Baja Restaurant.

While its tranquil beaches and low-key vacation vibe may make it feel like a world away from the rest of the region, Sandbridge remains relatively close to several Virginia Beach-area destinations and military bases. People are often heading to:
