A small-town sense of community in West Side near Lake Quannapowitt

The West Side of Wakefield is an older part of the city, with historic homes and proximity to Lake Quannapowitt’s waterfront parks. Wakefield’s MBTA train station is located here, making commuting to Boston convenient, and several local restaurants throughout the neighborhood give it a small-town sense of community. Summers are especially vibrant along the shore of Lake Quannapowitt, with a weekly farmers market and annual viewing of Fourth of July fireworks. “What attracts buyers is the proximity to Boston, the shops and the restaurants, and the nearby downtown area, which is very vibrant,” says Wakefield resident and Realtor Laurie Hunt. “What I think people like about living here is that it’s just good people and a good sense of community.”

Large historic homes that are some of Wakefield's oldest

Wakefield’s West Side primarily features single-family homes, with some apartments, condos and townhouses mixed in. “All the areas in Wakefield have beautiful homes, but the West Side in particular has a lot of the large, beautiful antique homes,” Hunt says. The West Side has some of Wakefield’s oldest houses, including historic farmhouses, bungalows and Dutch Colonials, which are often meticulously maintained to meet modern living standards while preserving their original character. Mature trees shade the neighborhood’s yards, and many streets do not have sidewalks. Sales prices range from around $600,000 to $1.6 million for single-family homes and $350,000 to $900,000 for townhouses and condos. The housing market here moves quickly, with homes selling after an average of about 13 days, less than a third of the national average.

The West Side has two parks on Lake Quannapowitt: Gertrude Spaulding Park, a large green space beside the water with a playground, and Hall Park/Veterans Field, which has a waterfront baseball diamond, a weekly farmers market in the summer and some of the best viewing spots in town for Wakefield’s Fourth of July fireworks. Moulton Playground is a small park in the center of the neighborhood with a baseball diamond and play equipment for kids. About a mile west, the more than 100-year-old Bear Hill Golf Club is one of Massachusetts’ longest continuously operating private golf courses.
