Commuter convenience and a large regional park

Less than 10 miles east of Washington, D.C., Walker Mill is home to one of the largest green spaces in Prince George’s County. The 471-acre Walker Mill Regional Park offers walking paths that weave between a woodland-themed playground, sports facilities and a community garden. But even with this park, commuter convenience is what’s most important to the community’s 12,000 residents. “Most people can walk to the [Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metro station], which is always easier than dealing with traffic to get there,” says Victoria Brown, an associate broker with Fairfax Realty Elite who has sold a few houses in the area. Interstate 495, locally known as the Capital Beltway, is also just east of Walker Mill.

Walker Mill is part of Prince George's County, Maryland, and is located very close to the eastern border of Washington, DC.

Some houses cost less than the national median

Walker Mill’s earliest homes include ranch-style houses, split-levels and townhouses from the mid-20th century. New Traditional houses and mid-rise condo complexes built from the ‘80s to the 2020s are also common. The median townhouse price is about $375,000, lower than the national median, while the median single-family home price is a little higher than the national figure at around $415,000. Condos typically cost between $170,000 and $260,000.

Crime statistics specific to Walker Mill are not readily available, but according to 2024 data from the Maryland Department of State Police, Prince George’s County has lower violent crime rates than state figures but higher property crime rates.

Hiking trails, a playground and a community garden at Walker Mill Regional Park

“Walker Mill [Regional Park] is packed year-round because there’s so much to do,” Brown says. Home to miles of forested hiking trails, the park also has the Woodland Wonderland Playground, where the equipment resembles trees, mushrooms and other whimsical creatures. Sports facilities include basketball courts, baseball diamonds, a skate park and tennis courts. Locals will also find a community garden, but there is a waitlist to rent a plot. The park was once an 18th-century tobacco plantation, and its Colonial-style mansion is currently undergoing restoration to reopen as a museum focused on the experience of formerly enslaved individuals. The county’s Walker Mill Regional Park Master Plan call for the green space to continue to grow over the next 20 years, with planned additions to include a dog park, an amphitheater and several other amenities. The proposal is still being developed, and construction hasn’t started.

Northwest Stadium, home of the NFL's Washington Commanders, is 4 miles to the north. Several indoor recreation centers are in the area, including Launch, a trampoline park and arcade. Tennis courts sit outside the Millwood Recreation Center, which is available to rent for gatherings.

Locals can walk or take the bus to the Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metro station

The Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metro station is in the northern part of the community. It offers the Blue Line and the Silver Line, both reaching downtown D.C. in about half an hour. The parking garage has over 1,200 spaces, and Metro buses in the area offer rides to the station. D.C. is a 9-mile drive west on East Capitol Street NE. Depending on traffic, the trip can take 30 minutes to an hour. The Capital Beltway is accessible on Ritchie Marlboro Road and Central Avenue, and it circles the entirety of D.C. Joint Base Andrews, one of the largest employers in the county, which is 10 miles south.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is 12 miles west, and Dulles International Airport is 36 miles in the same direction. The University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, less than 7 miles northeast, is the closest hospital. On Addison Road South, the Prince George’s House Men’s Shelter is a 60-bed transitional-housing facility for those experiencing homelessness.

Prince George’s County Public Schools, with Prince George’s Community College nearby

Walker Mill is zoned for the Prince George’s County Public School system, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche. The district serves around 131,000 students, with a 15-to-1 student-teacher ratio. The main campus of Prince George’s Community College is less than 6 miles east.

Local shopping and dining at Ritchie Station Marketplace

Warehouses, auto-repair shops and a few fast-food restaurants surround the Capital Beltway. Ritchie Station Marketplace has a grocery store and big-box retailers, and over 60 stores are available at the Mall at Prince George’s, less than 10 miles north. Even with these nearby commercial centers, Brown says locals often go to D.C. for shopping and dining. “You’re just as close to places like Georgetown, so a lot of people just head straight into the city instead of going to any of the malls or shopping centers in the county.”
