Plethora of green space highlights this Memphis suburb in Mississippi
Lake Cormorant is an unincorporated community in DeSoto County. The area is defined by patchworks of farm fields and vast wooded areas. Route 304 runs through the area and is part of the Delta Bluffs Scenic Byway. Driving this road is a visual feast of river deltas, limestone bluffs and rolling hills. “Lake Cormorant was once a resort area for hunters, anglers and people who wanted to enjoy its natural beauty,” says Robert Long, curator of the DeSoto County Museum in Hernando. Outdoors lovers will still find plenty to do here, including fishing, hiking and sports. “The area sits on the Great American Flyway (a “superhighway” for migratory birds). So, it continues to attract a lot of birdwatchers,” says Long. This is a rural locality, so do not expect a glittering nightlife but do look for a star-filled night sky. The area was home to many blues performers, including Memphis Minnie. In 1941, at Clack’s General Store in Lake Cormorant, one of blues most influential singers, Son House, was recorded for the Library of Congress.
Affordable homes are a big draw
Reasonable home prices are part of Lake Cormorant’s draw. Most homes are newer; more than two-thirds were built since 1991. Craftsman, Cape Cods and colonials are popular. Homes range from $120,000 for a 3-bedroom mobile home on 3 acres to about $825,000 for a 5-bedroom stone Tudor on 7 acres. Most homes sit on large lots, well back from the road. The neighborhood is car dependent. There are few sidewalks here.
Many homes in Desoto County have well manicured lawns.
The modern craftsman is one of the styles of choice for new home building.
Some homes have wrap around porches that welcome their guests.
