Brooktree North's cul-de-sacs lined with 1960s constructions

No major roads run through Brooktree North, making the quiet cul-de-sacs a safe place to ride a bike or take a walk. Whether they have one or two stories, the 1960s-era ranch-style and midcentury modern homes found here retain a cohesive appearance with shutters, shingle roofs and one- or two-car garages. Many homes here have pools, but even those that don't typically have a backyard big enough to install one. Prices range from $1.4 million to $1.9 million, with top prices featuring remodeled rooms and more square footage.

Summer swimming and year-round hiking in Walnut Creek

The flat, paved Ygnacio Canal Trail runs through the neighborhood and connects to green spaces like Arbolado Park, which has soccer fields, tennis courts and a playground. Members of nearby swim and tennis clubs can attend casual summer socials and enjoy the seasonal facilities. “There are not only a number of swim clubs, but the arts and rec programs are a standout in the city,” says Betsy Burkhart, the Communications and Outreach Manager for the city of Walnut Creek. The Department of Arts and Rec’s activities cater to every demographic, from preschoolers to seniors to intergenerational groups. Programs include summer camps, after-school sports and 3D printing classes. On the other side of Ygnacio Valley Road, Heather Farm Park is home to walking paths and the Clarke Memorial Swim Center, a public swimming pool. Hiking trails are a draw for the city as well. “They all are popular. And the city has more than 2,000 acres of open space,” Burkhart says. Less than 3 miles from Brooktree North, hiking and biking paths crisscross through the gently sloping terrain of Walnut Creek Open Space.

Shopping centers nearby and in downtown Walnut Creek

Brooktree North is all residential, but shopping and dining options are close at hand along Ygnacio Valley Road. Shopping centers here have chain dining and retail, as well as grocery options like Safeway and Whole Foods. Rocco's Ristorante Pizzeria is a family-owned spot serving Italian food since 1999. At Ygnacio Plaza, locals can get a haircut at one of the salons or browse the sporting goods at Sports Basement. However, Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek is the go-to shopping area with its wide selection of department stores, name-brand clothing stores and jewelry retailers.

Two BART stations serve Brooktree North

Those commuting throughout the Bay Area have a few options. Buses stop along Ygnacio Valley Road, taking passengers throughout Walnut Creek. The Walnut Creek Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station is about 4 miles away, as is Interstate 680, which leads south to San Jose. The Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre BART station is about 3 miles from the neighborhood. Oakland International Airport is about 30 miles away.
