Parks, trails and mountain views in suburban Walnut Creek
Trails converge in Larkey Park, a residential neighborhood just north of downtown Walnut Creek. This small, centrally located community is where the Contra Costa Canal Trail crosses the Briones to Mount Diablo Regional Trail. These two pedestrian paths wind through the city and up into the surrounding forests, meadows and ridgelines. It’s a major perk for bikers and hikers who want easy access to the outdoors, while living in the heart of this fast-growing East Bay city. “The trails are really beautiful, and there’s a fantastic park in the neighborhood,” says Realtor Ronni Schwartz of Dudum Real Estate Group, who has been working in the East Bay for more than 30 years.

Midcentury homes on leafy streets
Within the neighborhood, residential streets are lined with modest midcentury homes, mature trees, sidewalks and plenty of landscaped lawns. “It’s a great little community. There are lots of families and kids, and the homes are on bigger lots,” says Realtor Jon Ahern of Coldwell Banker Realty, a longtime East Bay agent. Residents will also catch a glimpse of Mount Diablo from the community’s streets. Most of Larkey Park’s homes were built in the post-war construction boom of the 1950s, 60s and 70s, although some new builds can also be found here. Lot sizes are large, typically around 8,000 square feet, so there’s plenty of room for gardening, landscaping and lawn décor. Prices for single-family homes range from $1 million to $1.5 million, slightly higher than the city’s median. Townhomes and condos are also available, with prices ranging from $500,000 to $1 million.
