Larkey Park
Suburban Neighborhood in Walnut Creek, California
Contra Costa County 94597
Midcentury homes on leafy streets
Within the neighborhood, residential streets are lined with modest midcentury homes, mature trees, sidewalks and plenty of landscaped lawns. “It’s a great little community. There are lots of families and kids, and the homes are on bigger lots,” says Realtor Jon Ahern of Coldwell Banker Realty, a longtime East Bay agent. Residents will also catch a glimpse of Mount Diablo from the community’s streets. Most of Larkey Park’s homes were built in the post-war construction boom of the 1950s, 60s and 70s, although some new builds can also be found here. Lot sizes are large, typically around 8,000 square feet, so there’s plenty of room for gardening, landscaping and lawn décor. Prices for single-family homes range from $1 million to $1.5 million, slightly higher than the city’s median. Townhomes and condos are also available, with prices ranging from $500,000 to $1 million.Green space and trail access close to home
Larkey Park, the neighborhood’s namesake, is a central gathering place with 13 acres of open space, an outdoor swimming pool, playground and game courts. It’s also home to the Lindsay Wildlife Experience, a wildlife museum and animal hospital that takes care of hundreds of birds, rodents and amphibians. The Briones to Mount Diablo Regional Trail, cuts across the park on its way to Mount Diablo State Park. Right outside Larkey Park, the trail crosses paths with the Contra Costa Canal Trail, which provides a safe way for pedestrians and bikers to get to nearby cities like Pleasant Hill and Concord.Highly rated East Bay public schools
Students can start their education at Pleasant Hill Elementary School before moving on to Pleasant Hill Middle School. Both schools receive B-plus grades from Niche. The last four years are spent at College Park High School, which earns an A-minus grade. Students can choose from an array of courses, from AP classes to visional arts, creative writing and drama.Major regional medical centers
There are several major hospitals in Walnut Creek and surrounding cities, including Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek Medical Center and John Muir Health. Both are major job centers for the region with thousands of employees.Getting around by car, rail and bus
Interstate 680 runs north to south along the neighborhood’s eastern edge. It’s a major highway that offers a connection to other East Bay cities like Alamo, Danville, San Ramon and Dublin. The neighborhood is also just 4 miles from State Route 24 which takes passengers to Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco. There are two BART stations within 2 miles of Larkey Park which can quickly shuttle across the Bay Area all the way to North San Jose. Bus stops can be found up and down Main Street.Dining, shopping and local businesses on Main Street
The eastern edge of Larkey Park is traversed by Main Street, which is home to a mix of auto dealerships, local businesses and restaurants. Residents can stop off at Manakish Oven for Mediterranean fare, Yan’s China Bistro & Bar for traditional Chinese dishes and Nama Sushi & Teriyaki for authentic Japanese cuisine. There’s a Sprouts Farmers Market in the neighborhood for groceries and everyday goods. For everything else, it’s about 2 miles to Downtown Walnut Creek.
