Woodlands
Ranch-style homes line Woodlands' quiet streets
Woodlands’ streets are characterized by large front yards, an abundance of trees and ranch-style homes built from the 1960s to 1970s. Over half a century later, these properties sell for between $1 million and $1.9 million. These prices are nearly three times the national average and slightly above the Bay area median. The occasional Monterey Colonial house makes an appearance among Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts-inspired residences, many of which also feature backyard pools. The neighborhood has a CAP crime score of 2 which is below the national average of 4.College and career-oriented education at Woodlands' schools
Woodlands' students have access to strong schools, long a major selling point for families moving to Walnut Creek. "More growing families are able to go to Walnut Creek and take advantage of its good school systems for their kids," says local Realtor Roland Osage of Real Brokerage Technologies, a lifelong East Bay resident. Valle Verde Elementary School, which sits at the heart of Woodlands, receives an A-minus rating from Niche. Foothill Middle School scores an A-minus and Ygnacio Valley High School a B-minus. Both are a little more than a mile from the neighborhood. Ygnacio Valley is the only high school in the district to offer an International Baccalaureate program, and career-minded students can take advantage of the school’s health and engineering pathways.Hiking and cycling along ridges and canals
Woodlands may not be immersed in a forest as its name may suggest, but it is surrounded by opportunities for outdoor exploration. The Lime Ridge Open Space preserves 1,226 acres of undeveloped ridgeline for hiking, dog-walking and cycling, and its warren of trails stretches for 25 miles. Tucked into the heart of Woodlands is the Valle Verde Neighborhood Park, a small green space with tree-shaded picnic tables and open space for frisbee or other field sports. The Woodlands Cabana Club with its three pools is open from May through October. While memberships are open to the community, fees are involved, though people can score discounts for taking part in a service day. The club also offers swimming classes and can host birthday parties or barbecues. The Contra Costa Canal, which runs 47 miles from Antioch to Walnut Creek, forms Woodlands’ northern border and allows for hikers and cyclists to explore much of Contra Costa County.Shopping centers sit along Woodlands' frontiers
Despite being about 4 miles from downtown Walnut Creek, Woodlands has direct access to two shopping centers. At the neighborhood’s southwestern edge, The Orchards at Walnut Creek includes a Safeway, while, at the northwestern edge, Oak Grove Plaza features a Trader Joe’s. Dulce’s Antojitos at the Orchards is known for its quality Mexican fare, including $1 tacos every Tuesday. At Oak Grove, the Ozora Sushi Restaurant serves up sushi and Japanese bento meals in an upscale setting. The shopping thoroughfare of Monument Boulevard sits 3 miles north of Woodlands.Train and highway access to major cities
Ygnacio Valley Road connects Woodlands to Interstate 680, offering access to downtown Oakland within a 20-mile drive and San Francisco within 30 miles. The Walnut Creek BART station sits 5 miles down Ygnacio Valley Road, allowing commuters to skip the traffic and access both major cities within 40-minute train rides. Oakland International Airport is 30 miles away. Woodlands is also just 3 miles up the road from the Walnut Creek Medical Center, which employs over 6,000 people.
