Walton is a rural getaway just outside Lincoln

As you pass through Lincoln's eastern limits, suburban subdivisions give way to farmland, dirt roads and early 20th-century homes. That’s how you know you’ve reached Walton, a pastoral outpost that’s only minutes from the city. The community offers a mix of quaint classic houses and modern estates on acreage. Its faraway feel is juxtaposed with the fact that many of Lincoln’s restaurants, stores and other amenities are within a 20-minute drive.

Well-established houses and luxury estates shape Walton’s market

Walton’s core, situated along A Street, features houses built mostly in the early 1900s, including Craftsman- and National-style options that sell for prices from the upper $200,000s to the lower $300,000s. Most of them have lots of less than a half-acre and sit along gravel roads. “It’s like an extension of Lincoln, but it’s out in the country,” says local Realtor Anita Rockenbach, who’s with NP Dodge Real Estate and has over 30 years of industry experience.

The small community opens up as it stretches south, with more multi-acre lots. That includes the Windhoek subdivision, where homes can top 6,000 square feet and cost well over $1 million. “Big, beautiful homes, with swimming pools. And they’re on 3-acre lots. Or some have 6-acre lots,” says Joanne McCoy, a local Realtor with Woods Bros Realty who’s been selling homes for roughly 20 years. Because of Walton’s rural nature, properties around the community typically come with their own wells and septic systems.

Public and private school choices are easy to reach

Students in Walton can attend schools in the wide-ranging, but highly rated, District 145. The school system is based in Waverly, about 10 miles north. Walton residents are particularly close to the district’s Eagle Elementary School, though, which is 8 miles east in the community of Eagle. From there, students can advance to Waverly Middle School and then Waverly High School, both of which sit within Waverly. St. Joseph School offers a private option just about 7 miles away in Lincoln, serving students in preschool through eighth grade.

Walton residents can tap into Lincoln’s shopping and dining scene

Walton is almost exclusively residential, aside from a post office, the Ross Automotive car repair shop and Grace Lutheran Church, which dates to 1915. However, all that Lincoln has to offer is a relatively short drive away. Residents are roughly 5 miles from the city’s busy O Street corridor, where amenities include:

  • The Gateway Mall, which is the only shopping center of its kind in Lincoln and features stores like Dillard’s, JCPenney, Burlington and Dick’s Sporting Goods
  • Aldi, Russ’s Market, Whole Foods, Fresh International Market, Hy-Vee, Natural Grocers and Super Saver for grocery items
  • The Marcus East Park Cinema, where you can catch new movies
  • Restaurants ranging from locally owned spots like Parker’s Smokehouse to national chains like Chick-fil-A
Downtown Lincoln’s Historic Haymarket District is about 9 miles from Walton. The district brims with more places to eat and shop, from Vincenzo's Ristorante for Italian food to A Novel Idea Bookstore for two floors’ worth of used books to explore.

Trails, parks, golf and fishing are all available close to Walton

Though located outside of the city proper, Walton is still close to Lincoln’s extensive trail system, which totals 184 miles in all. The almost 22-mile crushed limestone MoPac Trail East path cuts through Walton and is open to walkers, joggers, cyclists and horseback riders. “A lot more people are taking advantage of using the MoPac,” McCoy says. “Lincoln, in general, is just a biking community. Everybody likes to get on the trails.” Among the other ways to get outside and get active within 5 miles of Walton are:

  • A round at Crooked Creek Golf Club, an 18-hole course that is open to the public
  • An outing at Trendwood Park, which includes a playground
  • An afternoon of fishing at Holmes Lake Park, whose namesake lake is stocked with bass, catfish and walleye

Locals have quick routes to downtown Lincoln and beyond

Commuters in Walton can take 120th and O Streets directly into downtown Lincoln, 9 miles away; the downtown area is home to, among other destinations, the Nebraska State Capitol and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus. The closest full-service medical center, CHI Health St. Elizabeth, is an even shorter drive, just 4 miles away. Those heading out of town can use O Street, Interstate 180 and the Cornhusker Highway to reach the Lincoln Airport, which is 13 miles away.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
