Quiet, family-friendly living 35 miles from NYC

Just 35 miles outside Manhattan, Warren couldn't feel more removed from the city. Spacious lots on quiet residential streets offer a sense of seclusion, and wooded areas separate properties. "You get home and just can't believe you're in this quiet place. You could be in the middle of nowhere," says Judy Weiniger, Warren resident for over 25 years and Broker Associate at the Weiniger Group in Warren. Families take advantage of Warren's highly rated school system, ample public parks and many local businesses, which contribute to the easygoing atmosphere. "It's a perfect blend of rural and suburban lifestyle. Our town is very open, very friendly. It really is a happy place to live," Weiniger says.

Subdivisions have large lots and homes separated by woods

Many properties in Warren sit on over an acre of land. Smaller ranch-style houses, townhouses and bi-levels often sell for between $600,000 and $900,000, while spacious, contemporary houses range from $1 million to $3 million. The upper end of this range includes estate-style properties with custom features like modern interiors and inground swimming pools. Single-family homes make up most of the residential options in Warren. That said, Weiniger explains that the township has seen more high-density development including apartments around the highway and off Mountain Boulevard, one of Warren's main commercial strips. Warren's Cap Index Crime Score is a 2, lower than the national average of 4.

Warren schools have small class sizes and high ratings

Public school students in Warren begin at one of four elementary schools serving kindergarten through fifth grade in the township. Mount Horeb School, Angelo L. Tomaso School and Woodland School all earn A grades from Niche, and Central School earns an A-minus. Older students continue to A-minus-rated Warren Middle School and A-rated Watchung Hills Regional High School. "You see the commitment of the principals, and we have wonderful superintendents," Weiniger says. "Our town is very committed to keeping class sizes small." The high school hosts over 50 student clubs, including the Science Bowl Club, Italian Club, Economic Club, Film Club and Diversity Club.

Outdoor recreation at East County Park and the Municipal Complex

East County Park's trails along peaceful meadows and around ponds are a good place to enjoy all four seasons in the township. In addition to paved trails, there is a fenced-in dog park and picnic areas. The Municipal Complex, behind the township municipal building, has a playground, baseball diamonds, and basketball and tennis courts. During the summer, locals bring their picnic blankets and lawn chairs for concerts at the Municipal Complex, hosted by the Warren Township recreation department. Next to the complex, Warren Brook Golf Course is a public facility with 18 holes.
Smaller neighborhood parks like Greenwood Meadows Park have more amenities. "They're gutting that and putting in a nice new playground system in Greenwood Meadows," Weiniger says. "The town is always supporting the residents and trying to improve on the facilities."

Local restaurants on Mountain Boulevard and chains off Highway 22

Many of Warren's restaurants are off Mountain Boulevard. Locals can sip on margaritas at the lively La Colina Mexican Cantina or enjoy flatbread pizzas and burgers at Uproot. Mountain Boulevard also has doctor's offices, the township municipal building and the library. Nearby U.S. Highway 22 has big box stores like The Home Depot, Whole Foods, Walmart and Costco. "Everything is there within 15 minutes of our little oasis," Weiniger says. For local and organic foods, Bardy Farms sells seasonal goods off Washington Valley Road. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, about 8 miles away, is one of several nearby medical facilities.

Multiple modes of transit are available from Warren to New York City

Located about 35 miles west of Manhattan, commuters can drive into New York City on Interstate 78. Warren does not have a rail line going into the city, but commuters can park and ride in from any one of several surrounding towns. Just north, Long Hill has three train stations that are popular among locals. The station in Summit is popular as well. The Warren Park & Ride at Warren Corporate Center also services weekday buses to the New York Port Authority. Newark Liberty International Airport is 22 miles east of Warren.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
