Vacationer's gateway to the Adirondacks

In 1786, settlers to the Warrensburg area constructed the first bridge across the Schroon River, which may be why Warrensburg is known as the gateway to the Adirondacks. “It’s a quaint town with a lot of history,” says Jen Ball, an associate broker with Hunt ERA. Having grown up in Lake George and sold homes in the area for 19 years, Ball knows all the recreational options this small, quiet town offers, such as hiking and mountain trails, a public beach, canoe access to rivers and ponds, and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. The town is situated between the Schroon and Hudson rivers and is only 6 miles north of Lake George and 20 miles from Gore Mountain State Ski Center. “This is the place you want to spend your vacation and downtime,” says Linda Marcella, broker-owner of Adirondack Real Estate LLC. Born and raised in nearby Thruman, Marcella returned to the area after 30 years of living elsewhere. “I moved back because I missed the people and all the community activities,” she says. People get to know their neighbors in Warrensburg, and local events like summer concerts and the world’s largest garage sale provide many opportunities to socialize. Warrensburg is also just

River, lake and mountain paradise

The Warrensburg Historic Mill District Park along the Schroon River is the former site of the town’s historic manufacturing mills. It features a picnic area and gazebo and hosts the Warrensburg Riverfront Farmers Market on Friday afternoons from June to October. Across the river, the Warrensburg Recreation Field features three athletic fields, a playground, a pavilion where summer concerts are held, and tennis, pickleball and basketball courts. Morry Stein Park and Beach at Echo Lake offers an outdoor space where visitors can cook out, swim and spend quality time with their friends and families. Canoe and kayak access is also available on the lake’s eastern side. Hiking enthusiasts have access to the Hackensack Mountain Trail, which climbs over 700 feet giving visitors a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. Cronin’s Golf Resort along the Hudson River is a family vacation spot. In addition to its 18-hole championship course, Cronin’s has a swimming pool, canoe rentals and nightly campfires. The Lake George Escape Campground is one of many along the Schroon River. It features a dog park, volleyball sand courts, mini golf and many more amenities.

Homes that attract second-home buyers and investors

Warrensburg homes include early 20th-century traditional houses with two stories, open or enclosed front porches and lots of period character. They can sell for $65,000 to $300,000. Ranch-style homes built in the 1960s or later, many with attached garages and on half-acre lots, list for between $200,000 and $400,000. Duplexes, triplexes and properties with as many as seven units can list for $200,000 to $775,000. “Warrensburg is a second-home market, and buyers want something they can afford,” Marcella says. “You’ll find mostly single-family homes here, but there’s also a decent number of multi-family homes and short-term rentals.” From traditional bed-and-breakfasts to Airbnbs, owners take advantage of the year-round recreational opportunities that attract vacationers to Warrensburg. “Main Street has a fair number of stately Victorians,” Ball says. “Many have been renovated and are now bed and breakfasts.”

Satisfying eateries, delis and town histories

Among Warrensburg’s restaurants, The Bond 1786 stands out for its setting. It’s housed in the historic Merrill-Magee House and its rustic atmosphere includes exposed wood beams, stone fireplaces and large windows that look out to gardens and the Adirondacks. Lizzie Keays Restaurant and Cocktails occupies part of another historic building — the Empire Shirt Factory. Established in 1879, the factory produced as many as 6,000 shirtwaists and 2,400 robes daily. “My mom used to work at the shirt factory,” Marcella says. “Today, it’s known as River Street Plaza. Inside, the developer hung enlarged pictures with factory workers, which I’m always drawn to.” Newly opened in 2024, Lizzie Keays features a terrace overlooking the Schroon River and was named after a former factory worker whose paycheck was found on the property during renovation. Jacob and Toney’s grocery store, also known as the Deli and Meat Store of the North, has been in business for over 100 years and is famous for its giant subs that people stand in line to get. “I’ve been going there since childhood,” Marcela says. “Their meats are top shelf.” Oscar’s Smokehouse has been featured on the Rachel Ray Show and sells its smoked meats and cheeses worldwide. For groceries, there’s a Grand Union supermarket on Main Street and a Price Chopper off Route 9 going south out of town.
