Suburban Neighborhood in Warwick, Rhode Island
Kent County 02886
From ranch-styles to colonial-inspired homes
There’s a mix of residential architecture in Cowesett, with some of the most common being colonial-inspired homes, ranch-styles and split-levels. “There’s definitely more diversity in housing, and more properties close to the water due to the neighborhood being next to Greenwich Bay,” Alvarez says. “Some of the homes are historic too — some as old as 100 years old!” Houses here tend to have larger lots and yard space and are shaded by leafy maples and cedars. Properties on the east side of the neighborhood are by the bay, which allows for quicker access to waterfronts. The neighborhood has no sidewalks, but that doesn’t stop residents from walking their dogs or taking their daily strolls. Prices start at $450,000 and go up to $850,000.Spending the day at Godard Memorial State Park
Most public green spaces are several miles away. Godard Memorial State Park is about a 4-mile drive away and is one of Rhode Island’s most visited parks. Each year, the park attracts thousands of visitors with its trails, spacious lawns and beach. When warm weather rolls around, residents often celebrate birthdays on the grass or sit under a tree for a picnic. There’s also a nine-hole golf course and a performing arts center used for weddings and concerts. Godard Memorial Beach is also part of the park. Families splash in the water, go boating and even ride horses by the coast.Standout athletics at Toll Gate High School
Located in Cowesett, Cedar Hill Elementary enrolls nearly 350 students in grades K-5 and has a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1. Niche rates the school a B-minus overall. Winman Middle is substantially bigger, enrolling over 700 students in grades 6-8. It earns a C-plus. Toll Gate High School, with over 1200 students, is known for its athletics. The hockey team was even featured in a 2006 documentary after winning the 2004 state championship — effectively ending a 26-year winning streak held by Mount Saint Charles Academy. Toll Gate High earns a B-minus overall.Historic destination and active neighborhood association
Within the neighborhood is Clouds Hill Museum, a portal into Victorian life. Not only is the property on the National Register of Historic Places, it also contains furnishings, textiles and other historic items inside. Aside from this attraction, the Cowesett Heights Neighborhood Association (CHNA) holds events of its own. The annual block party is the most important activity, with over 250 attendees each year. Residents use this time to mingle, chat, enjoy food trucks and listen to music.Traveling with I-95
Interstate 95 runs through the neighborhood, allowing for quick travel to nearby cities. Providence is about a 13-mile drive away, and the Rhode Island TF Green International Airport is about a 4-mile drive. For a public transportation option, Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (RIPTA) bus lines run through the city of Warwick. In this neighborhood, the bus stops every hour at Cowesett Corners.Shopping & dining in Cowesett
The bulk of Cowesett’s shopping and dining options are located on Post Road, a commercial thoroughfare near the coast. Spill the Tea is a popular hangout thanks to the lounge-friendly lawn space. For dinner, The Shanty is a farm-to-table restaurant that focuses on local ingredients and innovative dishes. The South American couscous is a unique spin on this popular Moroccan grain, while The T.V. Dinner is an upscale take on comfort food. Alvarez personally recommends Chelo’s, a waterfront bar and grill: “They have amazing seafood. I love the fish & chips. It’s a classic. You can also literally pull up in your boat and order something.” Back to Basics Natural Food is a go-to for groceries and other everyday needs.
