About 50 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Washington Township offers pastoral serenity with its peaceful country landscape and quaint little villages. "People live here for a long time, so when the homes do finally come on the market, they often need to be renovated," says Realtor Kelly Raitano with RE/MAX Select Realty, who has sold numerous properties in the area. "But that just leaves more opportunity for building the home you really want," she adds. Although it is a rural community, Denise Lewandowski of Howard Hanna says the area is conveniently located. But she does point out that the community is car-dependent.

After an exciting summer of camping, students living in Washington Township will take the bus to school in the Moniteau School District, which has two locations. Kindergarten through sixth-grade students will start at Dassa McKinney Elementary School, which maintains a grade of B-minus on Niche. In seventh grade, students can transition to Moniteau Junior-Senior High School, which maintains a C on Niche and encourages students to develop their creative side with courses such as art history, ceramics, culinary arts and media production. Interested students can also participate in the active Future Farmers of America chapter, which provides opportunities to learn about natural resource management and food science — important aspects of an agriculturally focused community. Residents will find a serene escape within the 10,000 acres of State Game Lands No. 95. Throughout the year, hunters can pursue white-tailed deer, wild turkey and waterfowl in addition to the ringneck pheasants that the county stocks annually. Morning fishing trips to Glade Dam Lake are popular during summer, and more than 6 miles of trails make it easy to explore the area on foot or by bike. Although there are no local parks in the township, kids can get a thrill from the obstacle course and events held at Peaceful Valley Campground. With a pool and waterslides, lakes, a winery, a restaurant, an ice cream store and playgrounds, this campground may as well be its own tiny village.

There are a few entertainment options closer to home, though: In late summer, watch for signs advertising North Washington's famous professional rodeo show, a popular event for this usually calm and quiet village. Classes at The Glass Blowing Center allow practice making ornaments, pendants and sculptures.
