A vibrant cultural and dining hub in Northwest Washington

Known for buzzy weekend brunches and charming Victorian rowhouses, Adams Morgan in Northwest Washington is a mosaic of color, culture and history.

Jose Ramirez, a local real estate agent with Compass who has sold over 200 homes in the Washington metropolitan area, describes Adams Morgan as having an almost suburban character with its mid-rise condos, two and three-story rowhouses and quiet neighborhood streets that stem off 18th Street, a busy thoroughfare lined by eclectic boutique shops, lively restaurants and bustling coffeehouses. Also near the Smithsonian National Zoo, Georgetown University and a couple of Metro rail stops, Adams Morgan earned a spot in the American Planning Association’s annual list of the nation’s 10 best neighborhoods in 2014. “There’s also really nice parks and recreation centers in the neighborhood that actually get used every day,” Ramirez says. “It’s a more expensive neighborhood. A lot of people would choose to live there over most neighborhoods in D.C. if they could afford it.”

Grand architecture and historical Wardman rowhouses

With architectural styles ranging from Art Deco to Beaux-Arts, the neighborhood’s modern condos and rowhouses often feature large picture windows, exposed wooden beams, and clawfoot bathtubs. Designed with rounded and squared turrets, brick Victorian-style homes give Adams Morgan a sense of history and grandeur.

With an average listing price of $826,000, housing costs can range from the low $300,000s for an efficiency-style condo; to $700,000 for a brand-new rowhome featuring two bedrooms and two baths; to $1.5 million and up for a five-bedroom, three-bath “Wardman style” townhouse, complete with beautiful and expansive front porches. Named after famed architect Harry Wardman, he built more than 30,000 homes in the D.C. area and is responsible for a considerable swath of Northwest Washington’s architectural heritage.

Stringing up hammocks and walking dogs at Meridian Hill Park

Spanning 12 acres between 15th and 16th Streets, Meridian Hill Park is a historic community green space where people gather to enjoy its spacious hilltop lawn. The terraced steps leading to the lawn include statues of Italian poet Dante and a memorial to President James Buchanan. There’s also a cascading waterfall that drains into a reflecting pool at the bottom of the park, but the National Park Service has stopped the water from flowing for several years pending infrastructure repairs. Local skateboarders have since adopted the cascading fountain’s rolling banks as a skate spot. Though it leaves something to be desired, many residents still cherish the access to lush green trees and nature. “Everyone’s always there with their dogs,” Ramirez says. “On a nice summer or spring day, you’ll see people out there with their hammocks and things like that, just people enjoying the weather.” For a more sports-centered experience, Kalorama Park features an indoor recreation center, basketball courts and playgrounds.

Walking kids to and from school at Marie Reed Elementary

Students in Adams Morgan can attend D.C. Public Schools like Marie Reed Elementary School. Located on 18th Street, the school is a major component of the neighborhood with a campus that spans two blocks and is connected by a skybridge. In its urban setting, many parents walk or bike with their kids to school. Niche gives the school a B-plus rating. From there, students can advance to Macfarland Middle School and Roosevelt High School, which get a C-plus and C, respectively. Serving nearly 800 students in grades nine through twelve, Roosevelt High offers AP and honors coursework, as well as two specialized academies: the NAF Academy for Culinary Arts, Global Service & Diplomacy; and the International Academy for New US Citizens. The school also offers a fast-growing, dual-language program for those who wish to learn Spanish.

Celebrating the neighborhood on Adams Morgan Day

Residents of Adams Morgan love coming together to celebrate their neighborhood and they do so every September at Adams Morgan Day. Featuring a street fair, vendors, live music, artisans and more, the festival is just one of many local celebrations where neighbors can convene. Other annual events include the spring’s AdMo Art Walk — where businesses partner with local artists to display their artwork; and fall’s ‘Porch Fest,’ a day-long music festival showcasing a range of DC bands at various spots throughout the neighborhood.

Nearby Metro trains and bicycle lanes

The neighborhood’s two closest Metro rail stops — Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights — are located around the periphery of the neighborhood, so some residents are about half a mile or farther from them. Though that may seem far to some, Ramirez says the neighborhood’s various bus routes, bike lanes and micromobility services like the Capital Bikeshare and Lime electric scooters make getting around a breeze. “There’s a lot of bus routes right on 18th Street,” he says. “And D.C. is a really big biking city. I see lots of families on bikes with their kids seated on the back.”

Nightly shows at Madam’s Organ and al fresco dining on 18th Street

On weekday mornings, the tables and loveseats at Tryst are often filled with people meeting for coffee or studiously working on their laptops. In-house orders for a cappuccino, a cold brew or any other beverage are always accompanied by a couple of animal crackers. Describing itself as “D.C.’s community living room,” Tryst combines its coffeehouse vibe with a laidback lounge, as folks gather later in the evening for beer or wine. Next door to the coffee shop, Madam’s Organ has been part of the community since the early 90s. Spanning three levels and multiple bars, the restaurant and nightclub hosts nightly concerts and a slew of other events throughout the week, including DJ performances, karaoke and open mic nights.

In the years since the COVID-19 pandemic, many restaurants on 18th Street have expanded by adding well-decorated decks and patios in the road’s parking lanes. Originally intended to let businesses continue serving patrons as people practiced social distancing and other health precautions, the widened al fresco dining arrangement has added another element to a food and dining scene that’s already renowned for embellishment and spectacle; ranging from exuberant Sunday drag brunches at Perry’s to old-school tropical cocktails in colorful mugs and highball glasses at Tiki’s on 18th. While many of the bars and eateries bring a lively party atmosphere on the weekends, the neighborhood also offers refined globe-trotting dining experiences at restaurants such as Tail Up Goat, a Michelin star-winner specializing in Mediterranean and Caribbean-inspired cuisine.

Along Columbia Avenue, the neighborhood’s other primary thoroughfare, residents can shop for groceries and run errands close to home. In addition to a Safeway supermarket and an Ace Hardware store with potted flowers and bags of mulch on the sidewalk along Columbia Avenue, neighborhood residents can also shop for food and medicine at Harris Teeter on Kalorama Road, a more residential-oriented street in the neighborhood that leads to Meridian Hill Park.

I loved he atmosphere. The way the people walking around were laughing and visibly having a great time reminded me of the French Quarter. You can hear music everywhere. It is a fun place.
