Neighborhood in Washington, District of Columbia
District of Columbia 20017, 20018
Find anything from newer condos and townhouses to Queen Anne and Tudor homes
Home values in Brookland range from $600,000 to $1.3 million. Margolis mentions that many of the homes’ original construction dates are "Anywhere from the 1920s, 30s or mid-40s, which are younger houses for the city." The residential space swaps the Romanesque style of the surrounding churches for various other architectural types, like Tudors and intricate Queen Annes with bay windows that cost around $1 million. Meanwhile, smaller bungalows with broad front porches may cost between $650,000 and a little over $800,000. The neighborhood's median home value is $660,044, comparable to nearby Edgewood's median of $652,181 because of both areas' proximity to downtown. Closer to the Brookland-CUA metro station, there are more condos and townhouses available, while single-family detached homes make up much of the neighborhood's east side. Homeowners also vastly outnumber renters in Brookland despite the options for condos and apartments; the nearby college students don’t usually live around this area and usually live on campus. The absence of major retailers and sizeable yards gives the neighborhood a small-town ambiance, with suburban spacing between homes and streets with sidewalks.Small pocket parks with playgrounds decorate Brookland
For outdoor fun, locals frequent a couple of urban pocket parks. At Noyes Park, parents bring their kids to play on the swing set, playground and rock wall or eat a packed lunch under the covered picnic area. Alternatively, people can head to Turkey Thicket Recreation Center to swim in the pool, lift in the weight room or jog on the track. Athletes can play on several courts and fields here as well. For a taste of local culture, a couple blocks south of Brookland is Chuck Brown Memorial Park, dedicated to the Godfather of Gogo music, a funk subgenre born in the District. Chuck Brown Park has a memorial wall dedicated to the discography, life and influence of Brown, as well as lots of green spaces to walk dogs or jog, with several cherry blossoms that turn bright pink in the spring.DCPS has several neighborhood schools
District of Columbia Public Schools serves students in Brookland, with nearby options including Noyes Elementary and Brookland Middle School, both with C-plus Niche ratings. Students can graduate at Luke C. Moore High School with a D-plus rating. Brookland is close to several public charter schools in D.C., like Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy Charter School, rated a B-minus on Niche and serving grades K-8. There's also Washington Leadership Academy Public Charter School, a high school rated a B-plus.Get inspired by the arts in Brookland, or take in a show at Echostage
Brookland Arts Walk allows locals to support local businesses and express their inner artistic passions. Right beside the Brookland metro station on Monroe Street is a small district with 27 art studios to browse on the weekends. These studios offer photography services, calligraphy lessons, watercolor supplies, or community programs to engage D.C.-area children with the arts. The Brookland Civic Association plans the community's fun and games. It hosts the Greater Brookland Yard Sale in May, neighborhood clean-ups in the fall and spring, and social gatherings year-round. Take in a show at Echostage, less than 2 miles south of Brookland, with 30,000 square feet of space; this venue serves as a half-nightclub and half-concert hall, which regularly hosts EDM artists for performances.
Red Line metro access, and 4 miles from Downtown D.C. by car
Brookland residents can take one of Washington's oldest streets, Rhode Island Avenue, just 4 miles west to reach major government and business employers in downtown D.C. To beat traffic, residents can use the Brookland-CUA metro station for Red Line access downtown in minutes or as far north into Maryland as Glenmont or Shady Grove, which feature retail centers. Brookland also benefits from being minutes from the Maryland border for either commutes or a wide range of retail in Silver Spring in just 5 miles.Fine dining on 12th Street NE, with Shops at Dakota Crossing minutes away
12th Street NE hosts many of the neighborhood's dining establishments. Menomale serves hot Neapolitan pizzas, while Brookland's Finest Bar and Kitchen has an extensive menu of American fare, like salmon and grits, with a drink menu full of local draft beers. Primrose's wine bar offers cocktails and Croque Madames in a French-inspired space a little down the street. Residents can get butter chicken and a creamy mango lassi at Masala Story, all on the same street for locals to walk to. Though Brookland doesn't have significant retail options, less than 3 miles east is The Shops at Dakota Crossing, which has a Lowe's, Marshall's and D.C.'s only Costco. For trendy tastes, Bryant Street Market is a mile west on Rhode Island Avenue; this food court offers everything from mochi donuts to fresh Hawaiian poke bowls and a full-service bar.Brookland is D.C.'s "Little Rome" for its Catholic institutions
Brookland's reputation as D.C.'s "Little Rome" comes from its numerous established houses of worship, from intimate community favorites to grand historic institutions. St. Anthony of Padua Parish is more of a local Catholic church, while the Archdiocese for Military Services sends chaplains and priests to lead services in VA hospitals and U.S. military installations worldwide. Since 1898, the community has been home to the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America, a massive neo-Byzantine and Romanesque-style church where residents can gather for the monthly organ concert series or to make a visit to see the ornate architecture and blooming floral gardens. The Catholic University of America to Brookland’s north hosts the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, which is the largest Roman Catholic church in the United States. Trinity Washington University is a historic private school, founded in 1897 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Damur as the nation's first all-women's Catholic liberal arts college. Today, though the vast majority of the student body is still women, the School of Professional Studies and the School of Education are co-ed for undergraduate and graduate students. The Basilica draws visitors from all around the world, and its blue and golden dome towers over the neighborhood. Though Brookland is next to a large university, it's not known to be a hangout spot for CUA students.
