A little neighborhood of friendly faces

Working hands and friendly faces keep Gateway on its axis. Gateway is a triangle-shaped Ward 5 community that has small businesses and factories lining most of the perimeter. But, while it is laden with industrial businesses, single-family homes are its nucleus. “Gateway is great little neighborhood. It’s so small that all the neighbors know one another,” says Lina Criales-McAuliffe, a Realtor with Compass who has extensive experience in the Washington area.

Unique homes and large lots

Gateway’s residential space acts as its circumcenter. “The neighborhood is fascinating because every home is unique. There are a lot of bungalows and American Foursquares here. And the lot sizes are much larger than most other Washington neighborhoods,” says Realtor Criales-McAuliffe. You’ll also find Craftsman homes and brick federals. Detached single-family dwellings make up the majority, but a handful of rowhouses are interspersed throughout the neighborhood. Many homes have fenced-in yards and leafy shade trees stand as sentinels next to well-maintained sidewalks. Expect to pay about $500,000 for a 2,100-square-foot colonial built in 1927 to as much as $1.4 million for a 6-bedroom Industrial Farmhouse with more than 4,000 square feet.

Schools for sprouting scholars

Children in Gateway attend Langdon Elementary, known locally as the “pride of Ward 5." The school has a B rating from Niche and a 12-1 student-teacher ratio. From there, students move to McKinley Middle School, which has a C-plus rating and a student-teacher ratio of 11-1. Dunbar Senior High School also has a C rating and a student-teacher ratio of 16-1. The school features a unique scuba diving class that allows students to earn a Professional Association of Diving Instructors’ Open Water certification. Students undergo rigorous training at school before heading to the Florida Keys for the certification test.

Playgrounds and parklands

Dakota Playground packs fun for all ages. The play space is outfitted with the usual equipment: slides, swings and jungle gyms. The open space also includes a tennis court and a basketball court for impromptu pickup games. Fort Lincoln Park is a short walk from the neighborhood. This 6-acre park was the site of a Civil War-era Army hospital. Today, it features open-air pavilions and extensive play areas, including a brick climbing pyramid complete with a moat. Another play area resembles battlements that kids can clamber up, over and around. And don’t miss the U.S. National Arboretum, just outside the neighborhood boundary. Take a stroll among the 446 acres of gardens and woodlands.

Fast food and bulk buying

Chain restaurants, auto shops and liquor stores rest at the corner of many of Gateway’s intersections. Capital Eagle occupies the southwest corner of the community. The major corporation serves as an Anheuser-Busch distribution center for the area. DC Grocery Cash & Carry sells groceries and general merchandise at wholesale prices. Teeming with coveted goods, the warehouse market is a hit with bulk shoppers and small businesses in the area. For other shopping and dining options, The Shops at Dakota Crossing is a half-mile away. This hip new retail destination includes Lowe’s, Costco, Dick’s and Petco and several original restaurants.

Cool events for the calendar

Gateway is just a few blocks away from great music and hip night spots. Spend an evening partying at the Echostage dance club or croon along with your favorite local band at The Public Option brewpub. You can do both and still be close enough to walk home. And, when it comes to Independence Day, there’s no better place to be than Washington, D.C. Take the Metro or Uber down (don’t drive, there’s no parking!) to the U.S. Capitol and National Mall to enjoy a day of parades, concerts and fireworks. In August, head over to the Chuck Brown Memorial Park in nearby Langdon for an entertainment filled afternoon dedicated to the life legacy and music of this DC legend.

Getting around the town

While this is a walkable neighborhood, a vehicle is recommended for trips outside the area. Gateway is bordered by Bladensburg Road to the west, South Dakota Avenue to the northeast and New York Avenue to the south. The neighborhood is about 4 miles from the U.S. Capitol via Bladensburg Road. Reagan National Airport is 11 miles via Interstate 295. The area is service by Metro.
