Neighbors like each other in Woodridge
When Martin Weldon moved his family to Woodridge from buzzing Adams-Morgan, he hoped he’d be able to recreate memories of his youth. He wanted his kids, who were 10 and 2 at the time, to grow up in a close-knit community where there were always things to do and where they could grow up with their neighbors and become lifelong friends. “I was looking for a sense of community where individuals knew each other and there was engagement with youth in the neighborhood,” says Weldon, managing partner of sales and business development at the Menkiti Group with Keller Williams Capital Properties. Now, 18 years later, Weldon says he got what he wanted and then some.

Woodridge Halloween and block party
Woodridge is where locals gather for the annual block party, where everyone comes out in their costumes on Halloween, where longtime neighbors celebrate their birthdays together and include new residents. Weldon says his son was part of the Woodridge Warriors Youth Organization, which kept him busy with football and basketball. Weldon served as the organization’s chair. “I didn’t see my parents have that type of engagement,” says Weldon. “My kids have friends, and that’s what I was seeking for them at the time.”
DC neighborhood with off-street parking and front lawns
Woodridge is an eastern D.C. neighborhood bordering Mt. Rainier, Maryland, and Brookland, which is in Washington. It’s been called a “suburb within the city,” Weldon says, because of its comparatively large grassy lots, tree-lined streets, single-family homes and off-street parking. Early 20th-century homes were renovated with extensions and new levels, giving them an eclectic look. The neighborhood has Victorian homes, Cape Cods and bungalows, and some Sears catalog houses and farmhouses with unusual extensions. Streets have sidewalks, and they’re shaded by trees. Prices range from $402,000 to $1.5 million.
Woodridge residents can oftentimes enjoy large private driveways rather than street parking.

Brookland and Woodridge holiday celebrations
Woodridge does a lot with the nearby neighborhood of Brookland, Weldon says. The Menkiti Group oversees the Annual Celebration of Lights Trolley Tour, which runs through the area in search of lights during the holiday season. There’s just so much to do, he says. “What I was looking for is what I received,” Weldon says.
