Woodridge Halloween and block party
Woodridge is where locals gather for the annual block party, where everyone comes out in their costumes on Halloween, where longtime neighbors celebrate their birthdays together and include new residents. Weldon says his son was part of the Woodridge Warriors Youth Organization, which kept him busy with football and basketball. Weldon served as the organization’s chair. “I didn’t see my parents have that type of engagement,” says Weldon. “My kids have friends, and that’s what I was seeking for them at the time.”DC neighborhood with off-street parking and front lawns
Woodridge is an eastern D.C. neighborhood bordering Mt. Rainier, Maryland, and Brookland, which is in Washington. It’s been called a “suburb within the city,” Weldon says, because of its comparatively large grassy lots, tree-lined streets, single-family homes and off-street parking. Early 20th-century homes were renovated with extensions and new levels, giving them an eclectic look. The neighborhood has Victorian homes, Cape Cods and bungalows, and some Sears catalog houses and farmhouses with unusual extensions. Streets have sidewalks, and they’re shaded by trees. Prices range from $402,000 to $1.5 million.Places to play outside for humans and dogs
The outdoorsy feel on the residential streets of Woodridge extends to the broader neighborhood. Woodridge has several grassy parks within its boundaries and nearby. Barnard Hill Park is a U.S. National Park with a looped trail and mixed woods. Nearby Langdon Dog Park is the largest dog park in D.C., spanning 11,500 square feet of decomposed granite. Large and small dogs get play areas. Dwight Mosley Playground and Taft Field have a play place for kids, and the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America has scenic gardens.Rhode Island Avenue and nearby stores and restaurants
U.S. Route 1, known in Woodridge as Rhode Island Avenue, cuts directly through the neighborhood. Rhode Island Avenue runs west to Logan Circle and east to Maryland. Metro bus stops sit along the corridor, as do auto service shops and gas stations. Nearby Aurora Market is a neighborhood grocery shop selling pantry essentials and prepared foods like pizza and sandwiches. Potomac Fish House & Deli serves fish and chips, and Pennyroyal Station serves comfort food and cocktails for brunch, lunch and dinner. Eden’s Kitchen serves Eritrean cuisine in a warm, inviting dining room with oil paintings on the walls.D.C. public and charter schools
Kids in Woodridge can attend D.C. public schools. Burroughs Elementary School, Brookland Middle School and Dunbar High School are the assigned schools for the neighborhood. Burroughs, which has a B-minus rating from Niche, is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics school. Brookland has a C-plus rating from Niche and Dunbar is rated C. Dunbar is the first high school to serve Black students in the U.S. Weldon says his kids went to Friendship Public Charter School and D.C. International School, an international baccalaureate world school.Brookland and Woodridge holiday celebrations
Woodridge does a lot with the nearby neighborhood of Brookland, Weldon says. The Menkiti Group oversees the Annual Celebration of Lights Trolley Tour, which runs through the area in search of lights during the holiday season. There’s just so much to do, he says. “What I was looking for is what I received,” Weldon says.
