The rural neighborhood of Washington is home to a highly rated school district surrounded by brand-new builds. Car rides along local thoroughfares yield views of expansive flat fields maintained by nearby farmers. “It’s an area that attracts folks who are looking to get out of Norman and Oklahoma City,” says Addison Self, owner of Trek Coffee Co. and longtime resident. “Washington is super spread out, and there are a ton of nice homes in the area.” Between its rustic Craftsman homes, walkable schools and quiet nature, Washington really is a retreat from the buzz of OKC.

Subdivisions surrounding Washington’s public schools
Large properties with modern farmhouses surround the hub of Washington, a neighborhood so rural that the breeze carries the dust from nearby fields. Subdivisions near Washington Public Schools often display rustic Craftsman, brick ranch-style homes and traditional architecture, many with front patios holding a rocking chair or two. Tidy, green lawns and young trees decorate such neighborhoods, many of which have been recently constructed. But older, established farming properties might have longer, private driveways leading to their hidden estates. With an average home price of around $280,000, folks can expect to find homes ranging from $250,000 to $350,000.
The acclaimed Warriors Football team
Washington Public Schools is a highly acclaimed district, receiving an A-minus on Niche for its academics and quality administration. All three schools share a campus along Kerby Avenue, surrounded by residential subdivisions. “It’s a highly sought-after school district with top-notch sports teams,” Self says. “That attracts a lot of people to the area.” Both Washington Elementary and Middle School earn an A-minus on Niche. Meanwhile, Washington High School, home of the Warriors, earns a B on Niche and boasts a consistently highly ranked football team.
15 miles north to Norman
Located on the outskirts of Norman and Oklahoma City, Washington doesn’t offer public transportation to the same extent as its bustling neighbors. Residents are car-dependent, relying on local thoroughfares like Interstate 35 to reach Downtown OKC and Will Rogers World Airport, 32 miles north. Route 39 runs east to west from Purcell to Tabler, while Route 24 connects Washington locals to Route 39. Small coffee shops gather along Main Street, though not much else. Traveling 15 miles north to Norman is a compromise for Washington locals looking to find shopping and dining options. Norman Regional Hospital is also located here.

Where Colorado meets Oklahoma
Trek Coffee Co. was opened in 2022 by Self and his wife, Allison. “We decided to try something different,” he says. “We opened the shop, and it hasn’t stopped growing. It’s built like a log cabin because we wanted to bring a piece of Colorado back home to Oklahoma.” The shop is 2 miles up the road from Althea Vault, a café and bakery on Main Street serving a variety of sweets. Also nearby is Buffalo Sno, a kitschy drive-thru serving frappes, snow cones, smoothies and cold brew. Residents can find commercial retail options in Norman and Purcell. The University of Oklahoma has attracted a Walmart, Lowe’s, Target and TJ Maxx for students and surrounding locals. And Purcell’s Walmart Supercenter is surrounded by chain restaurants like Braum’s Ice Cream & Dairy Store.
Backpacking in the Wichita Mountains
Because Washington is quite rural, residents might need to travel farther to find outdoor recreation outside school athletics buildings. While the local baseball complex, indoor football facility and gymnasium are family-friendly, they mainly cater to active students on campus. Self and his wife recommend traveling 25 miles north to Lake Thunderbird Park for camping, water recreation and trailheads. The Discovery Cove Nature Center is entertaining for children and adults alike. For more adventurous locals, Oklahoma’s Wichita Mountains are 80 miles west, or an hour and a half drive. The wildlife refuge is popular for backpacking, fishing, climbing, off-roading and camping.
Football at Oklahoma University
Relying on Norman as the middleman between Washington and OKC certainly has its perks, especially when it comes to Oklahoma University’s sports. Folks can attend basketball games at the Lloyd Noble Center or catch a football game at the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. For less sporty residents, the Norman Music Festival and Medieval Fair are big hits in the spring. The Oklahoma State Fair and Memorial Marathon are also massively attended events closer to the city.
