Traditional homes in the scenic countryside

Washington Township features a mix of predominantly traditional styles, with established homes ranging from the 1920s to the 1970s. Housing styles include ranch styles, split-levels and Cape Cods. Many homes have been well-preserved or lovingly renovated, showcasing the architectural heritage of the area. More traditional two-story styles and farmhouses can also be found, usually accompanied by at least several acres of land. Prices for ranches, split-levels and Cape Cods range from $100,000 to $280,000. Farmhouses can start as low as $75,000, though prices generally depend on how much land they come with. Penn Cambria High earns accolades for its band and choir programs

With the township served by the Central Cambria School District, students can begin at Penn Cambria Pre-Primary School for kindergarten before moving on to Penn Cambria Primary for first and second grade. Both elementary schools earn C-plus grades from Niche. Students can then move to fellow C-plus rated schools Penn Cambria Intermediate for third and fourth grade, then Penn Cambria Middle for fifth through eighth grade. Penn Cambria High School earns a B-minus from Niche and is known for its choir and band programs.

Ebensburg, Altoona and Johnstown in easy reach

Even with its rural atmosphere, Washington Township offers easy access to nearby urban amenities. “You’re only about five minutes from Cresson,” says Hess. “That’s where people are likely to go for basic needs and such, but you aren’t far from Johnstown or Ebensburg either.” Johnstown provides plenty of shopping and restaurants, while Ebensburg serves as the county seat and includes medical facilities and government. Major roads like U.S. Route 22 allow residents to commute easily to either of these hubs, while also taking residents to nearby Altoona. “That’s one of the best parts about Washington Township – there’s not a whole lot in the immediate area, but we’re pretty much centrally located between Ebensburg and Altoona.”

Cresson offers convenience, while Johnstown and Ebensburg have variety

Nearby Cresson is home to the Cresson Springs Family Restaurant, a local favorite known for its homemade soups and homestyle Italian cuisine. “It’s great for grabbing a bite to eat if you don’t feel like heading into Ebensburg or Altoona,” says Hess. Mountain View Café is another popular restaurant in Cresson, and the Shop N’ Save provides a convenient place to stock up on groceries. Ebensburg’s downtown area provides additional specialty shops and boutiques, in addition to national retailers. The Downtown Johnstown's Farmers Market offers fresh produce and homemade goods from local vendors.

Residents can enjoy the quiet beauty of the Ghost Town Trail

Nearby Duman Lake County Park is a popular destination for fishing, boating, hiking and picnicking. The Ghost Town Trail, a multi-use trail converted from an old railroad bed, offers paths for hiking, biking and even cross-country skiing – all while winding through scenic woodlands and historical sites. Pine-Richland Stadium is a popular spot for local sports and community events. “Pine-Richland Stadium is a really nice, classic ballfield, and it attracts people and competitions from all around the county,” says Hess. In Johnstown, the Beulah Church is a historic stone church that dates back to the 19th century and still holds gatherings. The Cambria County Historical Society in Ebensburg offers insights into the area's past through exhibits and educational programs, preserving the township’s rich cultural heritage.
