A peaceful, country lifestyle in Washington Township
Rolling green fields define the landscape in Washington Township, a rural part of Pennsylvania’s Schuylkill County that’s known for its peaceful and pastoral lifestyle. “It’s just a sleepy rural area, very quiet,” says Brad Mullen, who’s sold homes here for 11 years and is an owner and broker of Mullen Realty Associates. “It’s very green, lots of green. The farm fields are crops — rows of corn, wheat and soybeans. It’s nice.” Nearby parks provide opportunities to enjoy the area’s natural beauty while catching fish or off-roading through the mountains on the north and south sides of the valley. The borough of Pine Grove, 6 miles away, has grocery stores and restaurants, and Interstate 81 nearby connects the area to large cities like Harrisburg.

Outdoor fun includes hiking, fishing and off-roading
The over 180-acre Sweet Arrow Lake County Park is a popular place to spend time in nature. The lake here features a waterfall and is encircled by a walking path through the woods and a disc golf course. Kayakers and anglers can explore the water, and kids can enjoy the playground. The Sweet Arrow Lake Conservation Association hosts events like lectures and seedling sales at the park’s clubhouse. Anglers can drop a line at Blue Mountain Fishing Lakes, a campground well stocked with trout and catfish. “A lot of people go off-roading with their side-by-sides and their dirt bikes,” Mullen says. At Dutchmen MX Park, motocross riders can practice stunts on the dirt tracks or compete in races. Nearby, the Rausch Creek Trailriders Club runs through rugged, mountainous terrain. The Appalachian Trail traverses the ridge in the community’s south, providing scenic views of the valley below; hikers can access the trail on state Route 501.

Homes have views of the pastoral landscape
Washington Township’s valley is filled with rolling farmland cut through with narrow country roads. Barns, silos and ponds dot the landscape. The ranch-style, colonial and manufactured houses here are usually on an acre or more, and they often have views of the surrounding fields. Home prices typically range from around $250,000 to $660,000, with manufactured houses ranging from $85,000 to $160,000. Working farms rarely come on the market.
