Shopping conveniences blend with a suburban lifestyle outside of Philadelphia

Though Washington Township, New Jersey, is tucked along the outskirts of Philadelphia’s suburbs, it still offers a well-connected lifestyle close to amenities and shopping. Suburban-style streets bend and weave through the new and established residential subdivisions – which feature a diverse range of architecture – scattered throughout the township. “Around here, people call this a premier community,” says Kevin Craig, a local Realtor with Real Broker LLC who grew up in Washington Township. “We’re 15 minutes from Philadelphia, and we have access to major highways, endless shops and restaurants, parks and a major hospital. Not to mention we’ve got one of the top school districts around.” Residents can access shopping centers and malls minutes away from their doorsteps, and the Jefferson Washington Township Hospital is centrally located within the neighborhood.

Varied architecture within new and established subdivisions

Suburban-style streets bend and weave throughout the new and established subdivisions scattered throughout the township. The neighborhood has a wide variety of homes, ranging from manufactured homes and condos to elaborate estates situated on multi-acre properties. “We’re definitely still growing, and we’ve got very diverse home styles, too,” Craig says. “There are so many new developments going on I couldn’t even tell you how many there are.” Manufactured homes range from $46,000 to $130,000; condos may cost between $190,000 and $310,000; and twin homes and townhouses can list for $220,000 to $450,000. Still, single-family homes are the most common. The neighborhood’s more established housing stock includes minimalistic bungalows, split-level houses, and ranch styles, some dating back to 1900. Some of the township's earliest subdivisions feature split-level and Colonial Revival styles built between the 1970s and 1990s. These can price between $270,000 and $600,000. Newer construction takes the form of New Traditional and Colonial Revival architecture. Newer homes and larger, established homes with more acreage can fetch between $650,000 and $1.6 million. Craig says Washington Township’s market stays competitive even with a wide variety. “There’s not a whole lot of inventory right now, so the average home generally will go under contract within a week of listing it, with multiple offers and significantly above asking price,” he says.

Shopping centers and Gloucester Premium Outlets offer convenience

Washington Township teems with convenient shopping centers, many clustered along Route 42 and County Road 654. Cross Keys Commons houses a Walmart and Marshalls, along with casual eateries, salons and local businesses. Washington Center Shoppes has additional grocery stores like ACME Markets and the ShopRite of Sewell. The Gloucester Premium Outlets pull shoppers to brand names like Michael Kors, Under Armor and Brooks Brothers just northeast of the township.
Along with a smattering of national fast-food chains, Washington Township is also home to a few local staples, such as the Village Pub, a watering hole with a gastropub menu, full bar and regularly scheduled live music. Packed with 1950s nostalgia, the Nifty Fifty’s Turnersville diner serves a lengthy menu of hand-dipped milkshakes, fresh burgers and old-fashioned sodas.

A hub of recreation at Washington Lake Park

Washington Lake Park is the township’s largest, featuring three playgrounds, multiple trails and various athletic facilities across its 330 acres in the heart of the community. Each playground is ADA compliant, and two are accessible to all users. Courts for basketball, tennis and volleyball are open to the public, as well as softball and baseball diamonds and soccer fields, where many of the park’s youth programs practice. The park’s outdoor amphitheater fills with crowds in the summer and fall for family-friendly events such as concerts and movies. While dogs are not allowed in the main park, Cedar Lake Park is a newly developed offset of Washington Lake Park specifically designed as a dog park to welcome the area’s canines.
James G. Atkinson Memorial Park is a 66-acre option with sports courts and playgrounds. The trails there are especially popular, with local cyclists and dog walkers enjoying them daily. Avid golfers can practice their swing at the Scotland Run Golf Club or Wedgwood Country Club, both within the township. The Funcity Adventure Park offers trampolines and ball pits inside its 40,000-square-foot facility.
