Washington is rural but packed with options

While Washington looks like a primarily rural community in western Wood County, the neighborhood gives its residents a taste of various lifestyles. Homes surrounding lakes and creeks offer waterfront views, and more suburban streets keep neighbors close to one another. The community is next to Washington Bottom, a large industrial area along the Ohio River. Once home to DuPont Washington Works, a plastics and chemical manufacturer now known as The Chemours Company, the area has grown to include several other manufacturing employers, like Northwest Pipe Company and Exel Logistics. Washington is also a quick drive from Parkersburg, meaning more opportunities to work are a few miles down the highway.

Homes range from suburban to secluded to lakefront

While most of Washington is forest and rural roads, some residential sections are suburban. Neighbors live close together but still enjoy sizable yards. Basketball hoops overlook narrow two-way roads and driveways, inviting kids to play together. Homes are mid-size and include ranch styles, New Traditional and bi-level architectural designs. On more rural roads, large custom homes and contemporary-style houses built within the past decade are more common. "New construction is very sporadic," says Blaine Ritchie, managing broker at Coldwell Banker Commercial Select Properties. "You'll have a builder do something out there occasionally." These homes typically come with acres of land — some used for farming. Overall, prices range from $200,000 to $615,000 throughout the neighborhood. One exception is the Lake Washington subdivision. This private community surrounding an artificial lake features summer cottages from the 1930s. Many homes still maintain their original hardwood, sunrooms, stone fireplaces and outdoor patios. Homeowners have access to private boat docks and a community clubhouse. Despite the luxury amenities and waterfront views, prices range between $70,000 and $170,000.

People boat on Lake Washington and walk the trails at DuPont Nature Center

Washington is filled with natural land, from forests to creeks and lakes. Sandy Creek and Vaughts Run wind through the community, connecting to Lake Washington. Homes near these areas are occasionally impacted by seasonal flooding. For a day on the water, some homeowners swim, boat, kayak and fish on Lake Washington or along Sandy Creek. Access to the Ohio River is also within 5 miles. Despite its name, DuPont Employee Recreation Center Park is open to the public, offering playgrounds, ball fields and tennis courts. In summer, visitors swim at the pool or enjoy the campgrounds. At the DuPont Nature Center, walking trails wind past wildlife habitats, flower meadows and an educational pavilion.

Residents use Highway 50 to get around the county

Washington's lack of pedestrian infrastructure and public transportation makes residents entirely car-dependent. Dupont Road is the community's main thoroughfare to Highway 50. Within 9 miles, residents can be in downtown Parkersburg or across the Ohio River. Camden Clark Medical Center is also 9 miles away, and the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport is 21 miles away.

Chemical contamination impacted the local water supply

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, DuPont Washington Works was responsible for contaminating several water districts in the Mid-Ohio Valley with PFOA chemicals throughout the late 20th century. This impacted household drinking water throughout the Parkersburg area, including Washington. DuPont was mandated to work with local water departments to clean and filter the water system. "It's probably the cleanest water there is now," Ritchie says. "There's probably some lingering effects, but people still live and drink the water here." Quality levels continue to be monitored to ensure water remains potable.

Lower crime in rural Wood County

Lubeck's CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, significantly below the national score of 4 out of 10.
