Blennerhassett is an introduction to rural living outside Parkersburg
Parkersburg’s city blocks give way to the suburban and pastoral roads of Blennerhassett, marking the beginnings of Wood County's rural western side. Forests and farmland fit between established residential pockets as the Ohio River flows by. The neighborhood’s separation from Parkersburg lets residents enjoy a quieter lifestyle without feeling as disconnected from city life as the county’s more secluded rural communities. "Until you get more toward Belleville, you're still relatively populated," says Blaine Ritchie, managing broker at Coldwell Banker Commercial Select Properties. "There's not a lot of isolated homes, and it's probably only seven to 10 minutes from downtown." A major highway connects drivers to Parkersburg and Interstate 77 within 8 miles. Two well-rated schools are within the neighborhood's boundaries, and parks with scenic views surround the community. The neighborhood's CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national score of 4.
A mix of suburban and rural subdivisions bring a diverse set of homes
Blennerhassett is primarily residential. Some subdivisions appear more suburban, with small lots and close neighbors. Spacious yards add a bit of privacy, and mature trees overlook winding roads, lush front gardens and inclined driveways following the neighborhood's occasionally hilly terrain. The west and south sides of the community are more rural. Most homes have at least an acre of land, and many roads dead-end into forests. Ranch-style, split-level, New Traditional and Colonial-inspired homes are across the neighborhood, costing between $120,000 and $270,000. Townhouses and large custom homes are less common, selling between $285,000 and $500,000.
Historical parks and waterways surround the community
Stretching along Blennerhassett's border are the Ohio River and Blennerhassett Island. The island has several historical attractions, including the estate where Aaron Burr headquartered his treasonous military exploits. From May through October, people tour the mansion, enjoy carriage rides and explore the outdoors. "People go there to picnic and easily spend the day there," Ritchie says. "You can even ride bikes there." The island is reachable via sternwheeler launching from Point Park in downtown Parkersburg. DuPont Nature Center offers hiking trails that wind through flowering meadows and protected wildlife habitats. Four miles away, Fort Boreman Park preserves a Civil War-era fortress where people admire the confluence of the Ohio and Little Kanawha rivers from a scenic overlook. In addition to the Ohio River, a few creeks pass through the neighborhood. These waterways experience seasonal flooding, but the overflow rarely impacts homes.
Students are split between two Wood County elementary schools
Students attend either Lubeck Elementary School or Blennerhassett Elementary School, depending on where they live in the neighborhood. The schools have B and B-plus Niche ratings, respectively. Next is the B-rated Blennerhassett Middle School, followed by Parkersburg South High School, which has a B-minus. The high school has a successful athletics program, with a wrestling team that has seven 7th consecutive Class AAA championships and 25 state titles.
A few restaurants and the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra are in the neighborhood
Retail options are limited, but 7-Eleven offers fuel and snacks, and DG Market is the nearest discount grocery store. Country Kitchen serves classic diner-style breakfast and American fare, while Western Sizzlin Steak House has a hot buffet. More locally owned eateries are in downtown Parkersburg, 5 miles away. The neighborhood is home to the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, which uses Blennerhassett Middle School's auditorium to perform. A few times a year, people come to listen to over 100 musicians play classical and pop music-inspired arrangements.
Highway 50 and Dupont Road connect residents to Parkersburg
Residents are entirely car-dependent. Dupont Road, Highway 50 and State Route 68 are the neighborhood's primary thoroughfares, but Highway 50 sees more traffic. On-and-off ramps become congested during rush hours. The neighborhood is less than 5 miles from Camden Clark Medical Center in downtown Parkersburg and Marietta Memorial Hospital's Belpre Medical Campus across the Ohio River. The Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport is less than 17 miles away.
Nearby industrial complex impacts Blennerhassett’s water district
The community touches Washington Bottom, a large industrial area along the Ohio River. The area holds several manufacturing plants, including The Chemours Company, formerly DuPont Washington Works. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, DuPont was responsible for contaminating several Mid-Ohio Valley water districts with PFOA chemicals during the late 20th century. This impacted household drinking water in Blennerhassett. DuPont was mandated to clean and filter the water system, but local water quality is still monitored.
