“One of the really cool things about our downtown is that when you look at our businesses, almost 40% are minority-owned,” says Jessica Rucker, executive director at Main Street Waterloo.
The Savvy Bean, Big Head Burger and Newton's Paradise Café are just a few minority-owned restaurants in downtown. There are also many shops and stores owned stores and shops including The Ivy Trellis Cards & Gifts, Soul Book Nook and No Filter Medical Aesthetics and Wellness — all of which are owned by women. The black-owned All In Grocers is located 2 miles south on Franklin. Hometown Foods, which is 4 miles south of Maples, is a family-owned supermarket known for its vast selection of international ingredients.
“[Waterloo] is one of the most diverse cities in the state of Iowa, so we’re just really happy to be able to have a climate where we can foster the entrepreneurship of those people who don’t always feel like they have those opportunities,” Rucker says.

Using Logan Avenue to get around
