At the northwest edge of Waukegan's city limits, Shore Highlands offers shady yards with mature trees and a quiet pace of life. "It's a gorgeous area with an almost rural feel, and it does feel a bit removed," says Niya Simone, the city's public relations specialist. The heart of Waukegan is about 3 miles away, and Green Bay Road is the only busy thoroughfare in the neighborhood. The community is close to a large manufacturing hub and one of Waukegan's best parks — The Field House Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Center. But in general, Shore Highland's biggest draw is the chance to escape the city bustle and live among the trees.
Exercise, swim and read at the Field House
Hinkston Park, just over a mile away, is one of the most popular parks in the city thanks to The Field House Sports Fitness & Aquatics Center which is located there. The facility hosts sports, fitness classes and summer camps with its 14,000-square-foot gym, climbing wall, four basketball courts and a walking track. The aquatics center has several pools, steam rooms and a sauna. "There are a million and one amenities at the fieldhouse. They even have a library in there," Simone says. "It's a real pillar of the community."
Several houses of worship in the neighborhood play a role in the community. Iglesia Ven Señor Jesus is a Spanish-speaking church with an annual event to give away school supplies to children. St. John's United Church of Christ welcomes LGBTQ+ groups to use its building as a safe meeting space.

Ranch-style homes with a few opportunities to buy new construction
Homes in Shore Highlands were mainly built in the 1930s through to the 1990s, though there is some new construction. Single-story ranch-style homes and split levels are common. Although fixer-uppers can start as low as $150,000, properties typically range in price from $250,000 to $350,000. Many homes have over an acre of land, and open plots of land are still available for development. There are no sidewalks, and most homes are shaded by mature trees. Some of the homes are at a slight risk of flooding, especially around the small pond off Highland Avenue.

Hispanic cuisine and nearby supermercados

Grand Avenue, one of the busiest retail corridors in Waukegan, is a mile away and runs by chain restaurants, Lewis Fresh Market and several Hispanic grocery stores, or supermercados. Waukegan is also known for its Hispanic restaurants. Even on the city's outskirts, there are plenty of options, including the family-owned El Sabrocito and Tamalería Doña Amada. Another nearby favorite is Quonset Pizza, which has served Waukegan since 1946.
Shore Highlands also borders Gurnee, a city that offers Six Flags Great America and Gurnee Mills Mall, the largest mall in Lake County.
