About Weatherford, TX

About Weatherford, TX

The “Peach Capital of Texas” and “Cutting Horse Capital of the World”

Weatherford has several titles. This North Texas city, home to 32,000 residents, is well-known for its peach cultivation and strong presence in the cutting horse industry, earning Weatherford the titles of “Peach Capital of Texas” and “Cutting Horse Capital of the World.” It is also the hometown of legendary Broadway star Mary Martin and her son Larry Hagman, who played the infamous J.R. Ewing in the 1980s drama “Dallas.” With so much history and personality, Weatherford is a city of balance. “It's got this small-town vibe that I think is so appealing, but you're only 25 miles west of Fort Worth," says Kamisha Tuley, a Realtor with Texas Property Brokers. Tuley has 15 years of experience working in the Fort Worth area. "Historic downtown is where you'll see what Weatherford is all about," she says. The city’s motto is “Growing with Tradition,” showing optimism for the future and proud ownership of its roots. Rather than living under the shadow of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Weatherford boldly charts a path with its own restaurants, shops, parks and events. “A lot of people who move out here want to spread their wings," says John McGuire, a Realtor with the Clark Real Estate Group who has eight years of experience selling in Weatherford. It’s the last frontier of the Metroplex.” While some come for the space and beauty, others come for the job opportunities. The largest employers in Weatherford are the Weatherford Independent School District, Medical City Weatherford and Parker County.

However, one event brings thousands of people to the area each year: the Parker County Peach Festival. "You can always find something happening at the parks and Chandor, but we're most well-known for the Peach Festival in historic downtown. Everyone – and I mean everyone – goes to it.” This annual event attracts over 50,000 visitors and includes live music, competitions and lots of locally grown peaches.

To engage with citizens and prevent crime, the Weatherford Police Department takes several measures. "We participate in around 100 community outreach events annually, including National Night Out, Coffee with a Cop, and frequent presentations for community and civic groups," says Lance Arnold, chief of police. "We conduct special services for our citizens, like Vacation Home Watches and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) assessments. Our crime prevention philosophy centers around Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety, where we dedicate additional proactive resources to areas with the highest overlapping concentrations of crime and crashes. Our approach has helped us significantly reduce the crime rate over the last few years."
