Webster Township has modern housing in rural surroundings

Less than 10 miles from Ann Arbor, Webster Township only began to see major construction in the 1990s and early 2000s. Despite that, the community remains dedicated to preserving its rustic surroundings. “There’s been a lot of development due to how close it is to Ann Arbor,” says Charlie Koenn, a broker with Swisher Commercial. “But there’s also been a push for a lot of conservation there – a tremendous amount of land is being preserved to keep its rural feel.” As a result, the area’s growth has slowed, attracting residents with its space, country atmosphere and access to high-ranking public schools.

The newest homes are frequently around Independence Lake

Koenn says that despite its rural surroundings, Webster Township is zoned for subdivisions. The areas north of Delhi Mills have a wide range of neo-colonial millennial mansions. Homes frequently feature brick exteriors, covered porches and gable roofs. Some of the newest houses in the area are outside of Independence Lake. These 21st-century estates often have multiple-acre lots, thousands of square feet and amenities like in-ground pools. The median price for a home in Webster Township is in the $650,000s, above the national average in the low $400,000s.

Most of the area is served by Dexter Community School District

The Dexter Community School District covers most of the area and has an A from Niche. The district was approved for a $242 million bond that will be used for major renovations and improvements to all five of its schools. Small sections of Webster Township are served by Ann Arbor Public Schools, Whitemore Lake Public Schools and Pinckney Community Schools. Niche gives these districts an A-plus, B and B-minus, respectively.

Woodland Preserve has acres of untouched forests and meadows

Surrounding the lake that shares its name, Independence Lake County Park is a popular destination in the summer. Families visit for swimming, boating and the spray park, while the outdoorsy crowd can be found fishing, birdwatching and hiking. Built in 1871, the Old Webster Township Hall is one of the oldest structures in the area. The one-room administration building now serves as a historic site and event venue. Woodland Preserve is 13 acres of protected meadows, forests and creeks. Just outside of the township in Dexter, the Hudson Mills Metropark features cross-country skill trails, camping sites and an 18-hole public golf course.

Carlyle Grill fills its menu with regionally-sourced ingredients

Due to its rural layout, most shopping and restaurants are outside Webster. Busch’s Fresh Food Market is in Dexter, about six miles southwest. Retail and franchise restaurants are available at the Briarwood Mall or the Westgate Shopping Center in Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor also has a variety of local restaurants and eateries. Opened in 2006, the Carlyle Grill offers fine dining made with regionally sourced produce and meats. Frita Batidos serves made-to-order Cuban burgers and milkshakes with flavors like coconut cream and hibiscus.

Dexter celebrates the fall with Apple Daze

Held every summer, the Dexter Summer Festival is a weekend of craft vendors, live performances and local food vendors. In the fall, Apple Daze rings in the autumn with a day of pumpkin bowling, hayrides and an apple pie-eating contest.

Detroit is about 50 miles east

Interstate 94 is the main highway in the area, making a straightforward route to Detroit, about 50 miles east.
