From farmland to high-end Charlotte suburb

Less than 25 miles south of Uptown Charlotte and roughly 5 miles from the South Carolina border is the upscale suburb of Weddington. This Union County town traces back to the 1824 creation of Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church, known today as Weddington Methodist Church. The area was predominantly agricultural until the 1970s when suburban development began to spread southward out of Charlotte. Today, Weddington is known for its collection of million-dollar estates. "We have Panther football players, Hornet basketball players, NASCAR drivers and a lot of company owners and developers," says Mayor Jim Bell. This community of more than 13,000 people is nearly entirely residential, with a generational family farm near the town center. Daily life here often involves commuting to Charlotte’s Uptown for work and connecting with friends at the private tennis and racquet club in town.

Weddington Corners has everyday needs covered

A yellow Victorian home adorned with green shutters stands out in Weddington’s Town Center. Known as the historic Thomas-Wrenn House, it serves as the town hall. Behind it is the town’s only shopping center, Weddington Corners, a one-stop shop for weekly errands from getting groceries and gasoline to shipping packages and going to the dentist. Regionally grown produce and artisan goods draw residents to Union Market, a specialty grocer with a farmstand-like setup south of town that’s open spring through fall. Waverly, a comprehensive shopping mall with a mix of national retailers, high-end boutiques and chain restaurants, is a short drive away. Another retail center sits east of town in Wesley Chapel.
