Neighborhood in Weirton, West Virginia
Hancock County 26062
Part of a rebounding city
The 1980s was the low point for Weirton when the area's legacy steel mills shut down. “There was a long period of decline, and within the last 10 to 15 years, new businesses have opened, and large manufacturers have come into the area,” says Rachel Keeley, the executive director of Top of West Virginia Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Weirton has a lot of first-generation immigrants from Italy, Greece, and Serbia who came back in the day for the steel mill, but they have since opened restaurants, which has contributed to the city’s rebound.” Form Energy, which occupies an old steel mill on Main Street, is a battery manufacturer that opened in 2024. It’s already expanding and is expected to employ 800 people once the expansion is done at the end of 2025. Another former steel mill will transition to an electrical transformer production plant opening in the first half of 2026.Locally owned specialty restaurants in Weirton
Serbians, one of the large immigrant populations in Weirton, shape the city’s culture with an annual food festival in July featuring Serbian culture, music and games. It’s held at the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church Picnic Grounds on Kings Creek Road. The family-owned La Cucina Italian Grill serves authentic Italian dishes inspired by inherited recipes. Theo Yianni’s Greek Restaurant is known for its Saganaki, a flaming fried cheese appetizer. Waiters douse the flames with lemon juice right before serving it. Both restaurants are on the east side of town, about 5 to 7 miles away. That part of the city has Aldi, Kroger and Shop ‘n Save for grocery trips.More affordable home prices than in Pennsylvania
One of the attractive aspects of living in Weirton is the affordability of the housing. “West Virginia has lower taxes than Pennsylvania and, over the past 20 years, Weirton has become a bedroom community for Pittsburgh,” Arehart says. “People who work in Pittsburgh don’t want the higher taxes there, and they want to build and buy in the panhandle.” Cape Cod and raised ranch are standard styles, and the prices range from $110,000 to $175,000. “There’s not much inventory right now,” he adds. “Families that want to downsize are holding on to their houses. The only ones listing are estates, divorces or people moving out of the area for work.” It’s generally a quiet neighborhood, reflected in the 3 CAP crime score, below the national average of 4.Cove Valley Park
To the north of Kings Creek, a tributary of the Ohio River, about 3 miles from the Weircrest neighborhood, is Cove Valley Park. The creek that flows by the park makes a scenic backdrop for photo shoots, and the park, in general, is a place to go on sunny days as the many trees provide a shady canopy for activities in the playground and basketball court. A paved walkway is used for biking, rollerblading and leisurely strolling. Golfers will enjoy the spectacular views of the Ohio River along many holes at Williams Golf & Country Club, about 5 miles south of the neighborhood.Weirton Transit
It’s a few miles south to reach Pennsylvania Avenue, where there are stops for the Weirton Transit bus system, which revised its routes in 2024 after the city took over ownership from a private operator. In addition to many people commuting to Pittsburgh for work, some also commute to Franciscan University across the river in Steubenville, Ohio or locally at the Weirton Medical Center, off the main highway of Route 22. The hospital is the largest employer in Weirton.‘B’ rated schools in Hancock County
Kids in Weircrest who attend public schools go to Weirton Elementary, rated a B-plus on Niche. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1 and is for kindergartners through fourth grade. Weir Middle is rated a B-minus, along with Weir High School, which is close to the middle school. That also gets a B-minus, and students can participate in the dual credit program at the high school and West Virginia Northern Community College in Weirton. Private school options include Weirton Madonna High School, which gets a B grade.
