Wellsville is a classic Ohio River town

Life in the village of Wellsville flows with the Ohio River. Although, the village hasn’t changed much since its founding in 1848. “Wellsville is similar to most towns around here. It’s your typical hometown where everybody knows everybody,” says Realtor Joyce Mays with Cedar One Realty, a lifelong resident of the area. Wellsville is small in stature, but it gained value as a key shipping terminal. Even as trade on the river has slowed, it’s still Wellsville’s primary industry, as goods are transitioned from ships to the railroad or intersecting highways around town. Wellsville isn’t the bustling hub it may have been, but its river town identity remains.

A key Ohio River shipping terminal

The Ohio River is Wellsville’s flowing source of commerce. Wellsville is a key shipping terminal along the river, due especially to its tristate location with a railroad and multiple intersecting freeways. At the southwest end of town, the riverfront is home to the Wellsville Intermodal Park, an important transition point where goods are moved from river to railroad. Around the park, there are shipping docks and other industries taking advantage of the location, like the Marathon Petroleum Corporation.

Relics of the early 1900s line the streets

Wellsville’s compact grid fits between the river’s north bank and state Route 7. The blocks are lined with time capsules from the village’s early boom: early 1900s Queen Annes, 1910s Foursquares and 1930s workman’s cottages, to name a few. “Everything in Wellsville is older,” Mays says. “That’s one thing that makes it different than other towns around here.” The median price is about $140,000, which is standard for these relics of early 1900s architecture. Many of these older homes in need of refurbishment can be found for under $100,000. There is a relatively newer tract on the other side of Route 7 called Russel Heights. This community’s 1950s ranch-style homes can reach around $200,000.

Local businesses on Main Street

Most of Wellsville’s local businesses live on Main Street, just a few steps from the river. Early 1900s buildings host shops like Slacks Antique Mall, bakeries like Sweet Amelia’s Homemade Sweets and coffee spots like Tony’s Coffee Bar. These are all within a short walk of each other, and so is Some Place Else, a restaurant serving classic American fare. Save A Lot, on the north end of town, is the only grocery store. However, Calcutta is 7 miles northeast and has multiple plazas with larger stores like Walmart.

Little League at Hammond Park and nature walks in the hills

The river is mostly for commercial use, so recreation is found in the green space and woods around the village. Hammond Park is Wellsville’s main recreation space. It’s attached to the Russel Heights community, just north of the village grid. It has a large lawn and multiple baseball and softball fields. There’s also a basketball court and playground. The wooded hills south of the village offer hiking trails and campgrounds. Highlandtown Wildlife Area and Reservoir are less than 10 miles northwest on state Route 39. This state-run wildlife area covers over 2,200 acres. Boating, paddling and fishing are all allowed on the reservoir.
