The heart of the Snack Belt
Located in the heart of the Pennsylvania Snack Belt, Lower Heidelberg is a rural neighborhood that runs along the western border of Reading. “It’s constant rolling hills of beautiful farmland,” says Matt Wolf, a real estate agent with RE/MAX of Reading. Wolf has lived and sold houses in the area since 2002 and has even worked in the local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America. “It’s Pennsylvania Dutch country, still heavily agricultural. You’ve got Blue Marsh Lake and the State Game lands in the neighborhood, which are both major attractions.” Lower Heidelberg is known for its spacious properties and proximity to Reading, which is Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city. The neighborhood is home to the small town of Wernersville, which has a population of fewer than 3,000.
A diverse range of classic architecture
Lower Heidelberg features a diverse range of classic architectural styles. In Downtown Wernersville, buildings are influenced by a range of 18th- and 19th-century styles, including Victorian and Colonial style-townhouses. American flags fly over large wrap-around porches. Townhouses are built right next door to family owned shops. Outside of the town, Colonial-style houses set across large lots are common, with some Tudor and log-cabin style houses also for sale. Houses range extensively in price, with many homes being sold above $1 million and some below $200,000. The range in price is partly due to the new constructions happening on the eastern side of the neighborhood. As homebuyers move closer to Reading, they will find expansive newly built Colonial-style homes that are frequently sold for more than $1 million . Large properties frequently feature long private driveways that connect to meandering back country roads. There are no sidewalks in the neighborhood, and houses are spaced far apart from each other. Old Appalachian forests and farmlands divide the neighborhood between stretches of mature foliage and flat fields.
Award winning schools in Berks County
Residents of Lower Heidelberg can send their children to Green Valley Elementary School, which is ranked as the second-best public elementary school in Berks County. Green Valley is conveniently located within the neighborhood itself and earns a score of A-minus on Niche. Wilson West Middle School is also located within the neighborhood and scores a B-plus on Niche while earning a spot as the fourth-best public middle school. Wilson High School is the fourth-best high school in the area and is situated 5 miles east of Lower Heidelberg. Wilson High School teaches over 2000 students and earns a B-plus rating on Niche.
Entertainment in Reading
Reading offers residents a bustling downtown area with a wide range of restaurants and entertainment venues. “Reading is known for the performing arts center, which hosts some pretty big-name concerts. I just watched a comedy performance there,” Wolf says . The town features minor league professional basketball and ice hockey teams. The GoggleWorks Center for the Arts is a former factory that the city has converted into a cultural and community art center. The building hosts lessons on ceramics, glass blowing, photography, wood carving and a wide range of other arts and crafts. A Giant grocery store is located along the neighborhood’s eastern border.
Explore the outdoors
Cacoosing Meadows Park is also located along the eastern border of the neighborhood and features three baseball diamonds next to a pond. Blue Marsh Lake along the neighborhood’s northern border and is a major recreational site in Berk’s County. The artificial lake and nearby PA State Game Lands Number 280 are maintained by the Army’s Corps of Engineers. The game lands are known for being a popular pheasant-hunting area. With 1,147 acres of water, Blue Marsh Lake is the preferred location among locals for fishing, swimming and boating. The lake has a swim beach with a public pavilion and a sectioned off portion of water to protect swimmers from boat traffic. There are 36 miles of hiking trails surrounding the lake. Every Fourth of July, residents make use of the ample grassland to host lakeside picnics and barbeques.
Employment in Reading
Reading is home to the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University, a private Catholic college that teaches almost 3,000 students. “Alvernia has been on the rise in recent years,” Wolf says. “The school gained university status and it’s even been renovating much of the downtown area. The school has created a business incubator and brought in Pennsylvania’s largest Starbucks,” Wolf says. Reading Hospital is fewer than 8 miles east of Wernersville and is one of the area’s largest employers. The hospital was recently named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals according to Healthgrades, earning the recognition for the second year in a row since 2022.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
