Growing outdoorsy city 7 miles north of the border

About 7 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border is Weslaco, which sits in the Rio Grande Valley and has a rich agricultural history. The city's name is derived from the development company, W.E. Stewart Land Company, which arrived in the early 1900s during the agricultural boom. In 1919, a group of investors established the town, using the initials of W.E. Stewart Land Company for the name. Today, about 43,000 people call Weslaco home, and 88 percent of residents are of Hispanic or Latino origin. The population has increased by about 15 percent since 2010. "It's known for its growth," says Margiee Fender, a Realtor with Medina Real Estate and resident of Weslaco. "It's within 30 minutes of everywhere people want to go, and the price of living here is more affordable. It's also a very outdoorsy community and a friendly, welcoming city." Weslaco is home to a handful of city parks, the Estero Llano Grande State Park and one of the largest single-day festivals in Texas.

The city is served by the Knapp Medical Center, a 227-bed non-profit hospital that is the city's second-largest employer behind the Weslaco Independent School District. Other major employers include HEB and NAMCE/Wood Crafters.

"It's 16 miles long." Estero Llano Grande State Park is a popular spot for residents to hike or bike on the 5 miles of trails or to go birding with over 340 species in the park.
